I had been waiting for my chance for more than 2 years to try out a Riv with the looooong stays and fatter tires that was designed for sweptback bars, so when this one came up for a favorable price a couple months back, I jumped on it.

Riding notes so far:

1. Rides like a Riv—in it, rather than on it.

2. This is the t most comfortable bike I’ve ever ridden.   With Billie Bars and thumbies, it just fits right   I had a Sam Hillborne in the same 51cm size for the last 4 years.  Rigged with a long, 12 cm stem and Albatross bars, it never felt quite right for me, Though many have found that combo to be amazing, I was forever in-between.  Always leaning over too much to grip by the stem and when I would sit back I wanted a bit more bar.

3. I really do like (as much as one can) the uphills on BofurBike. Could it be the longer stays?  I know that I can remain seated, but the ample space to grab the Billie Bars up by the stem lets me stand as well.

4. Now that I have the gearing dialed in and a pair of cushy switchback pass tires, it’s time to go on a few more lengthy rides and see more of my city.

5. Feels like it was made for a Wald basket up front too.

Beautiful bike! I like this colour, and the wrapping you’ve done on the bars and stays.
Agree that Appaloosas go so well with baskets.
Hope you have many fun and long rides on this one!

The bike looks great! I have a hunch the Appaloosa is going to be a modern classic in the way the XO-1 became! Enjoy riding it and thanks for sharing!

Yes Michael.  The thing is, I think it can do SOOOOOO many things well.  I wonder: will it ultimately panned for not being the "best" at anything?
For me it will mostly be my every-day bike.  I'll go to the cafe on it.  Occasionally get groceries, etc.   I'm convinced it will make a FANTASTIC adventure bike, should I ever need that, as well.

All praise for the looks go to Matt @HoboHubWorks here in St. Louis. I gave him some ideas and he made them happen.
He does TREMENDOUS builds (like the old-school Rivendell Refresh bikes), runs all kinds of groovy group rides (check out the Muskrat Ramble this weekend if you're in Missouri!) and is an all-around great human being to be around.  He is the Grant Petersen of St. Louis, as far as I can tell and the work he has done on my bikes is always TOP NOTCH.

Can confirm an Appaloosa makes a fantastic adventure bike!

Onkaparinga River National Park in South Australia!
On one of the fire roads leading down to the river. It was mid-spring when I took the photo a week ago.

Can happily confirm the Appaloosa's adventure credentials from here in the UK. It's a true do-it-all.

I’m in the North of England, near the Peak District national park. That photo was taken in the Lake District however. Sadgill to be precise. Good riding but not for the faint of heart haha.

I’ve seen a couple of Appaloosas built up by the Woods Cyclery with 55mm tyres and fenders…

I managed 50mm panaracers with velo orange fluted 65ish and that felt maxxed, took some futzing to work too.

So on my bike there I've got 50mm gravel kings and Simworks Honjo 62mm's. Works ok! We're a PITA to fit though, especially with a mudguard mounted rear dynamo light...  I'm not sure I' do full metal mudguards again on a bike like this. Seems a better idea to have plastic ones you don't need to fuss over and can remove and install at will easily!

Looks great! Curious to know the brand and model of your handlebars ? I'm getting a Sam Hillborne and looking at different options for the bars. Not yet sure if I'll go with drop bars (Noodle) or upright. For the upright, the Billie bar is one possibility but I'm interested to know about yours because they don't look as swept back, which is appealing.
Thanks, Tim

Hi J Schwartz,
Your bike looks great! Curious to know what handlebars you're using? I'm new to the group and will be getting a Sam Hillborne soon having purchased the frame (size 57), which is being built up at Rivendell. Looking at different options for the bars and I'm not yet sure if I'll go with drop bars (Noodle) or upright. For the upright, the Billie bar is one possibility but I'm interested to know about yours because they don't look as swept back, which is appealing (I realize yours is an Appaloosa). General insight from all in the group about handlebars on the Hillborne would be appreciated. I'm 5'10" with pbh of 87.
Thanks, Tim

Tim - I use Ahearne Map Bars on my Sam, and I like them quite a bit. The nitto sort of equivalent would be the wavie bar.

Thanks, Michael. The Ahearne Map Bar seems like a good possibility.
