If ya know, ya know....

Sheldon was a huge influence in my early descent into bike obsession, and I doubt I would be here today as a competent mechanic, former wheelbuilder, fixie-converter, Riv-rider, etc, etc. without his incomparable contributions to the bicycle community. Sheldon made the world a better place, plain and simple!

So imagine my delight when his beautiful orange Ram showed up on ebay a couple of months ago and I somehow managed to win the auction! The bike is currently an impeccable time capsule, with everything but the tires matching the build description on his website. I intend to ride it, and will no doubt tinker (Sheldon-style) to try out a few different iterations for fun (fixie? 650b conversion? upright/swept-back?). Anyhow, enjoy a few pictures to revel in the nostalgia:

PS: I'm sticking with the Bio-Pace...  :)

That's the dream, isn't it?  :

Curating bikes that will outlive us.  That's the easy part.
Leaving enough of a mark so that people want your old build because it used to belong to you.  That's the tricky part.
Bikes are easy.  People are complicated

Ride it well!

Congratulations! I take it that that is Sheldon's gear chart, too? Please do post photos of your own modifications.

Patrick Moore, who recalls scrupulously calculating and typing out gear charts to tape to his stem -- tho' I always liked much closer ratios than Sheldon tolerated.

Saint Sheldon!
What a beautiful bike. And the gear chart! 1x before 1x was 'a thing,' and that's a great gear set, both in the range and the specifics.

Congratulations. I'm happy you've got that bike.
As Bill said, a bike build that's more wonderful because of the mana of the builder/rider is pretty rare outside of bike racing.

Riding a Sheldon-inspired 'dingle' Quickbeam today in San Francisco and Santa Rosa - actually shifted for the headwinds/hills

That's so cool. Like you, Sheldon is largely responsible for giving me my start in bike tinkering, and giving me an appreciation for fixed gear conversions, Bridgestones/Rivendells, and hot-rodding older bikes. This was the first Rivendell I ever lusted after (when it was in its fixed gear iteration), and I'm now the happy owner of one myself. I like that is still has the 27"/630mm BSD wheels on it--I daresay it's the only Rambouillet (or Rivendell?) that's ever been converted to 27" wheels.

I recently decided to go full-Sheldon and but a Biopace ring on my fixed gear. I like it. He might have been onto something there.

Nick,

An excellent score indeed.  The provenance is superb.  Plus the color, centerpull/sidepull brake combo, and excellent fender lines.  And that gear chart ....

Amazing! Harris was one of my local bike shops (RIP), and when I first got into both fixed-gear and Rivendell bikes, I bugged Sheldon for advice many times. I’m so glad his web pages are still extant.

Sheldon was a huge influence on me in the late aughts, which is evident by my Raleigh Twenty which has been thoroughly upgraded and has since been added to the website!   https://www.sheldonbrown.com/fuller-twenty.html

Photo of a recent commute on it.  I usually commute on either my Brompton or Bombadil though
