Hi all! I'm looking for suggestions on how I can run some low front panniers on my 26" Toyo Atlantis that DOESN'T involve putting clamps around my fork blades, and allows me to keep the canti rack as-is. My issue is that my Atlantis only has one set of braze-ons at the rear of my fork dropouts. My options would be wide-open if only my "touring" frame had all the appropriate mounting points to live up to its potential... but I digress. I really hate the look and the thought of pipe clamps - always have. Also, this bike will have fenders most of the time, so that complicates things a bit as well.

I own a Tubus Nova that I love, and hoped would work with this bike, but sadly it just won't given this configuration. I thought I would throw my conundrum out to the group to see if there's some solution that I'm just not thinking of.

Cheers!

Hey Brian,

Is it possible that a Mark's Hub Area rack would work? The only thing you'd need to add is something like the Gamoh rack adapter (bluelug.com) so that you'd have attachment points at the fork dropouts. Just a thought.

Cheers, John

Thank you John! See, I knew at least one of you would remind me that such a solution existed. Forgot about the Gamoh. I’ve actually used them before to make lighting brackets. They’re original intent would suit my needs perfectly it seems!

I wouldn't trust two panniers riding on a QR axle. I know you said you want to maintain your front rack setup, but would be best do ditch it and go with something like a https://global.bluelug.com/nitto-big-front-rack-34f-silver.html

Thanks for the input, Armand! I see your point, and it's a good one. I'd need to take a measure of the Gamoh adapters, but if the spacing was right, I should be able to distribute the forces across two other points of attachment besides the QR: In theory, I could run the fender stay bolts through the hole on the Gamoh that lines up with the rear-facing braze-on on my fork dropout (assuming it also lines up with the QR axle - but that would remain to be seen). So that would be one direct mount to the fork. The other direct mount would be the crossbar on my Tubus rack that mounts to the mid-fork stay. I would like to think that triangulation of forces would take a lot of the burden off the QR. But again, I'm just speculating here.

I’ve had the same question, but about my latest gen Appaloosa. I don’t understand why the Appaloosa doesn’t include fork braze ons to work with standard low rider racks.

I had been thinking the hub area rack was the only option, but just saw this at Blue Lug: https://global.bluelug.com/catalog/product/view/id/31396/s/nitto-s-rack/category/41/

It’s only supposed to be for thru-fork joints, but they have a blog post showing it mounted on an Appaloosa.

Has anyone managed to mount a Tubus low rider or similar?

Cheers,
Keith

I don't have a solution for mounting the rack to a secondary set of fork end braze-ons, but I am able to provide a cheap solution to mounting a low-rider to the 'not-so-low-rider' mounts on some rivs. I uses the spare chainring I butchered for a light mount to use for a tubus tara. You just mount one end of the chainring to the fork mount, and then use a bolt/washer/nylock nut to mount the rack to the chainring, and voila! The cool part here is if you invert the direction of the cut-up chainrings you don't have to worry about rotation since you triangulate the loading direction. They even survived a 200 mile tour through the Sierra's back in 2022!

I appreciate this thread, was having the same question/thought process for my appaloosa too and was thinking of starting a similar thread. Any users of the marks hub area rack- does it only work for mini panniers or could you mount regular back o bike bags to it? any favorite dedicated lowrider racks? in my research i found the tubus variety, marks, nitto s rack..

If you're willing to do a full upper rack with low riders the Pelago commuter with optional low rider attachment looks really slick.

I really like the chainring as extension! I do have a set of Tubus Duo racks, but I think I just don't trust those with the braze-on mounts. I may need to go to the Tubus Tara or similar. I don't really like the Tubus silver finish compared to NItto in terms of durability, but the Tubus has more rated capacity, is less expensive, and is easier to find in stock than the hub area rack.

Nitto MT-Campee F20 26" rack.  Low rider pannier carriers are detachable.  Rack will mount to you brake studs and fork dropout braze-on.  You can mount your fender stays to this same braze-on or mount you stays to the multiple holes of the Campee rack dropout (see pic on right):

Yes, I also thought the height at which the mid-fork mounting point on the Appaloosa forks is brazed on was wrong, but I managed to mount a Tubus Tara stainless model by turning the horizontal rails on the rack upside down, so that the mounting tab is above the rail instead of below, and using the lowest of the three dropout mounting points on the rack to attach it to the upper mount point on the dropout.  Having inverted the rails, you also have to swap the left and right rails so that they are still both facing outwards.

This hack also means that you need panners such as Ortliebs (which I have), where the clips on the pannier completely surround the rail when the pannier is mounted, as the tab at the end of the rail which prevents the pannier sliding off the back of the rail is now on the underside. The Ortlieb panniers also have considerable adjustment available for the tab that hooks over the bottom of the rack, which is needed because the bottom of the rack is no longer centred under the rail due to the wierd mounting position needed.

Here's a photo of how I mounted the rack.

Dusting off this thread to give an update on what ultimately worked for my situation. I ended up finding some nifty rack adapters through Blue Lug. These are stamped with the “Viva” brand (?) and there are two versions; one for QR and one for thru-axle hubs. They bolt through an existing rear-facing rack mount, with some slight wiggle room because it’s a slightly slotted hole. The other part of the adapter creates a forward-facing rack mount that is thicker, and threaded for M5 bolts. This adapter allowed me to use a Nitto Mark’s Hub Area low rider rack (works with 26” / 650b / 700 wheel frames). The mounting tabs on the Hub Area rack are offset enough that they don’t conflict with the thick safety tabs on my fender stays (surprisingly!).
