This Saturday was the club's annual visit to Diablo. My son climbed Diablo on his Roadini (very slowly), and my wife "chase cammed" him up and down the mountain. The video is here: https://youtu.be/oZSQoeJrK8I?si=M4NMlZnLiwzuuYcu

If he's pedaling slowly it's because he's 13 and still hasn't gotten his puberty-driven muscle spurt yet. (Yes, he walked the final 17% grade at the summit parking lot despite his 36x51 low gear)

(I skipped the summit because I wanted to climb Morgan Territory Road with my younger son on the tandem before it turned into a blast furnace --- it was already an oven at 12:00pm)

How long is the climb? With a 36 X 51 and a 27” or 28” diameter wheel he’d have a 19” or 20” gear. At 60 rpm that’s 3 or 3.5 mph.

I recall grunting my new-to-me Raleigh Sport (~ 93-70-53”) up steep hills after we moved from a flat ~700 feet to a very hilly 6K+ feet shortly after I turned 13. I was pretty well developed for a 13 year old, but it was hard work.

I endowed thy purposes with words that made them known.

Here's his Strava track: https://www.strava.com/activities/14440295494. Looks like it took him 4 hours or so. He did not complete the ride as it was 90F and I picked him (and my wife) up with the minivan after my ride was done. He had severe allergies from descending without wearing eye protection despite our admonishing him to wear eye protection. Gotta love teenagers. You can see that he was capable of riding at 2.1mph without getting off his bike. The final summit he walked at a 2mph. He has a power meter so the power numbers on the strava track is accurate (and boy does his 10-year-old brother make fun of him)
