Clems for Kids

[Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!]

After Josh C’s excellent NBD For my Daughter thread, I thought about Clems for kids. It isn’t  inexpensive, but a great bike can be such a gift for a child. I have two teenage boys, one in college and one in high school, and they have grown up riding Clems. I got a lot of raised eyebrows when I sent my older boy off to college with his Clem, but it has been great for him. Both of my boys treat bikes like tools - they get you where you need to go and notice nothing else about their bikes. But when my college boy took that Clem he really developed a fondness for it. It reminds him of home (me, specifically ☺️) and he likes how it looks and has found it incredibly useful. “I’ve been biking everywhere, Mom,” he said, “I love that bike. It’s so useful.”

My younger child will also take a Clem to college. He rides my husband’s unloved Clem H. He takes it out to clear his head and listen to music while getting a little cardio (he’s mostly into the weights these days). 

This weekend my college boy came home for the first time since moving out and he brought his bike. We did the Fall Foliage Ride with my bike club, a blissful 34 miles on winding country roads. He needs a dyno wheel set and lights because I noticed his rechargeables were dead and he is missing one. He cannot be bothered with that at college. I think I’d rather just pay for the dyno and not worry about him riding around in the dark.

Has anyone else gotten their kid a Clem to ride through their childhood and into young adulthood? Pics of my young men in the next post.

These are them. Late to grow, both of them. The college boy is about 6’3” and likely still growing, and my high schooler is just starting to grow and is 5’7”. The 52 Clem H may or may not fit, depending on how much he stretches out.

My kid very much uses her bike as a tool as well. As for lights, I was already talking about having a buddy lace that existing clem wheel with a dyno hub over the winter. We went out for a ride the other night and took one of my daughter's friends, so I set her up with lights, only to find out that MY KID had let her lights die weeks prior. Things like this don't seem to cross her mind, and it'd make me feel better knowing she doesn't have to worry about it.
