From "Joey's Roadini" in today's email. Where can one find this stop? I don't see it in Riv's catalogue, and a Google called nothing up.

Thanks.

Patrick Moore, who remembers that headset on his 1991 Specialized Stumpjumper Team (or was it his 1993 XO-1?).

Fairweather x Nitto cable hanger

Comes in dull (I think Riv calls this Nitto finish dull bright), black, or silver. They also make a 1 1/8" version.

It looks like the Fairweather Nitto cable hanger:

Nice looking doohickey.

Thank you Danny, David and (offlist) Michael. Looking at it more closely in the Bluelug and Analog photos, I think I'll hold out for the RH headset-mount hanger (out of stock) which will give me another cm or so of drop.

I like the look of this hanger and waited way too long to buy a silver one from Blue Lug or Circles while they had them in stock. Ended up with black which was painted, not anodized. Had a lot of fun removing the paint and getting it to a silver that looks like it was in someone's toolbox for 40 years.

Thanks all again. After looking more closely at the Nitto clamp-on stop I put in to Rene Herse for an alert when their headset-mount stop is back in stock. The RH will give another cm or so of drop, which is good given the crowded housing with the lowish stem (high head and steerer).

You know Patrick, the Tektro 1277A fork mounted cable stops allow for a unfettered cable and housing  run, just like a caliper brake. The silver ones seem to be unfavored in the US market, but are available from European retailers and even imported on ebay. Dia Compe and Origin8 make variation of these also.

Having the hanger right above the canti makes for a very solid feel to braking. I didn't expect that, I only wanted to eliminate the dependence of the cable to the stem/headset. I never much liked that as if I ever wanted to adjust the stem I had to readjust the cable hanger. With the fork mounted ones you can do anything with the stem and headset without changing the cable drop to the hanger, just like a caliper brake.

Using the fork crown mounted brake stops also seems to completely eliminate brake shudder. Steve

Thanks, Garth and Steve. I've considered that before, principally to avoid the causes of shudder, but the biplane crown is not drilled, and I expect (have not peered under the hood) that the requested-beefy under-crown threaded fender boss will interfere with any bolt run through any hole I drill there, just as it did on other bikes with front caliper brakes. And the Paul's are precisely constructed enough to fix the shudder that the earlier Tektros caused without (almost) 45* toe-in. What I'd really wish is that Minimotos could fit over 42s and 50 or 55 mm fenders to work with my DA 7410 brake levers, but alas ...

Right now, for record, I have a -- Shimano? Forget, but I think it's Shimano -- sturdy steel headset-mount hanger that is plenty stiff but that has only about a cm of drop. The RH will double that for a less cramped housing run from the inner end of the bar tape.

I bought one of the stem mount stops after seeing the link here.  It is in transit from the UK and I will report back once I have tested it.  (I would have preferred one of the fork mounted ones but I bought it for a bike with center pulls.)
