Hi all, I'm hoping to do a two night camping trip the weekend after next with a friend, on my Cheviot, leaving from NYC... Originally thought Harriman night one, Fahenstock night two, and home, but just wondering if there's a more interesting itinerary, either one way with the train home or round trip. I think we have 60 mile days in us, give or take.
Would appreciate any tips, thanks!!
A

How about Taconic State Park - Rudd Pond (just north of Millerton, NY), followed by Bash Bish Falls State Park further north?

(I've been to the former, but not the latter.) You can take the Metro North train to Wassaic, and a good portion of the route from Wassaic to Rudd Pond to Bash Bish is on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail.

I was going to suggest something similar as Bob.
Take the Metro North all the way to Wassaic and get off there.  You could do a nice loop in the rolling farmland of eastern Dutchess County and go into NW Connecticut and even Western Massachusetts and make it back to the train station and home in 1 day.

NYC to Harriman is okay, but the main route is mostly 9W. You can hop on and off, but it's been a long time and I don't recall any great routes. To get to Fahnestock from there is kind of a straight shot across the Bear Mountain Bridge and down 9D on the other side of the river, to 301 and take that up into Fahnestock. This is more recent stomping ground for me, and there are some of the oldest dirt roads in the country in that neck of the woods, including Sunken Mine, Indian Brook, Old Albany Post, S. Highland, Lane Gate, Canopus Hollow. Totally doable on a Cheviut. Some climbing, but nothing super long or super steep.

One option would be to take Metro North to Beacon (lots to see and do in town, about an hour train ride from Grand Central, get a $5 lifetime bike pass when you buy your ticket) and go out from here. There is a camp ground on the side of Mt. Beacon, so you could do a couple of nice rides from here, or camp in Fahnestock your second night. Could also do the Bear Mountain Bridge to Newburgh Beacon Bridge, which includes a nice winding climb up 218 past West Point, with panoramic views of the Hudson.

The objective with a plan like this would be to avoid spending the majority of that first day on 9W, and the second on 9D. Happy to be a guide for a Saturday. You can contact me off list if you want more info about rides around here, which are numerous and really nice in just about every direction you care to go.

Hi A, are you looking to do something for the Swift Campout? I have a private ride planned that weekend but we could probably fit you and your friend. Email me and I'll send details. justinkennedy00 at gmail dot com

Wow, thank you all, this is really helpful! I hadn't heard of a couple of these parks, and I do the ride to Bear Mt. enough that I didn't realize there are more enjoyable rides to be had.
Mark, I do want to hear more about the dirt roads up there, and I'm guessing I'm not the only one...is there a map/app/guide? Thanks for all your insight.
Justin, thank you! We're not doing the swift campout, but have fun and thanks for the invitation.

Hey guys. I've tried to save these rides in map my rides or ride with gps, but not having any success. The old ones in the system don't show cue sheet, so I can't tell what roads (unless you zoom in real close and scroll around, be my guest, very user unfriendly. Maybe you now must upgrade to get the cue sheet?)

Here is Indian Brook on a map:

You can scroll around and look for these other dirt or mostly dirt road that hook in:

Old Albany Post
S. Highland
Avery
Canopus Hollow
Sunken Mine (zoom in, it runs through parkland)
Old Forge
Ninam

Other roads that are nearby with links via regular roads. These are partly dirt (one side) and hills:
East Mountain
Long Hill

There are others but my recollection of names is somewhat limited...
I will try to

I'd take the LIRR east and 'do' the North Fork and stay in Greenport's KOA. There's a ferry over to...uhm...Shelter Island?... and then you could go on to the South Fork and head out to the lighthouse and/or Montauktown (goo--ooo-oood seafood!), and pass the Big Duck on your way back. Traffic should be minimal because "the season" is over. Sunburn would be your only problem and the waters should still be warm enough to stop and skinnydip.

After all the very great and generous route advice, we ended up closest to Joe's suggestion....except we were on a boat instead of bikes!  Last minute, my brother found a 1974 Marshall Sanderling on Craigslist for cheaper than a rivendell, so we figured we'd get it and sail from Mattituck to Ram Island, then from Ram Island to Old Lyme, CT, to see if the boat floats etc.   And I was dreading all the climbing of the Bear Mountain routes; this was the easiest way out.

It floats!   We slept on the deck because the cabin is disintegrating, but this boat is SOLID, and reminds me of my Cheviot - smooth, a little heavy, just as fast as if it wasn't, safe, and comfortable.
