Hi there,

I currently has a 56cm Susie and ended up trading it from my 53cm. I found the bigger frame and tires were more comfortable. I am 5’10 with an 82.5 PBH.

Now I’m buying a Platy and am in the same boat in between sizes. My PBH is just above the bottom limit for the 55cm. I know Riv says you can size up. I want to make sure it feel zippy but not small. Any thoughts? Thanks!

At that size and PBH I would probably suggest 55. Are you asking about going larger than that?

Based on the 55cm Platypus that my brother-in-law has, and I have test-ridden, I would guess you'd want the 55cm. For comparison, I'm 5' 8", with an 83 PBH, and my brother-in-law is the same height as me, but with probably a slightly shorter PBH.

It may depend on what bars you'll want to use (drops vs swept back, for example) and what your use case is for the platypus (fast road vs cruising/commuting, for example).

I agree with John on depending on the handlebar setup desired. Having gone up a size on a clem (64) - it felt awesome with a low swept back bars  and a moderate length stem. (loscos ~110 stem) It would have never worked with flat bars because the reach was soooo long even with a shorty stem. the stack was very tall as well so I couldn't use boscos or high rise bars with comfort. I have a "proper sized" 59 clem that I use swept backs (bosco/tosco) with a longer stem and I could definitely run flat/risers bars on it. I would be happy with either size (59/64). I have more bar options with the smaller size given you can go with stems in any direction. The bigger size felt easier to fit roomy and I loved the unloaded handling on trails - but less bar options. The loscos felt perfect and looked amazing so I honestly didn't try much else. In then end I chose to keep the 59 clementine purely off the front end felt better carrying a basket load and it was orange.

Im definitely going to do swept back like Billie bars bc I like the option of putting my hands forward on longer rides. I see this Platypus as a commuter, tourer, group ride zipppy bike if that helps. What I didn’t like about the 53cm Susie was how much I had to jack the seat up and handlebars but I was at the upper end range of the recommended pbh whereas with the Platy I’m at the very bottom for the 55!

I ride a 60cm Plat no problemo with a PBH of 87cm (admittedly I am 194 cm tall so my proportions are atypical). It feels very zippy and smooth, even with the parts that came on the 2023 completes (tosco 60cm and 120mm Tallux stem I believe).

The Platypus is the most popular Riv bike for a reason! I'm sure you'll love it no matter the size you end up with (as long as it's not too small).

I’m 5’7”, 82 or 83 cm pbh, female, have a 55 platypus with Billie bars on a 10 cm extra – tall stem. The bike fits me well, but feels larger than my mid chain stay sized bikes, HomerHilson and Betty Foy. Your Susie is already a “bigger “Bike  and you feel comfortable in it.

The Billy bars come WAY back.  In fact, I cut off one centimeter of mine and I’m thinking of doing another centimeter.  If the extra tall stem came in a 12 cm length I would’ve just gotten that. It is a. fabulous bar, and I love the way it angles back ergonomically.

With your comments, and longer upper body, and preference for a billy bar, I have a feeling you’ll be more comfortable with the bigger platypus

What's your saddle height?

The Platypus is a shorter bike than the Susie and you'll need a longer stem or different bars to get the same reach on the 55cm Platypus that you have on the 56cm Susie. The concern about trying to go to the 60cm Platypus with an 82.5 PBH is running up against the minimum saddle height; you may end up being constrained with saddle and seat post options to make it work.

Here's my 60cm Platy with a ~74.5cm saddle height, B17, and stock K-alloy post. You can see there's not too much space before the post starts to taper down.

Does the MN in your email mean you’re from Minnesota? I hope so! I do love Minnesota. Ok, back to business. If I understand your question correctly, I’m the perfect person to answer it. You are saying you like a bigger fit on a bike and your PBH is at the bottom limit for the 55, and will this be too big? Should you go with a 50?

I am 5’6” with an 81 cm PBH, which sizes me for the 50. But stubborn woman that I am, I own BOTH the 50 and the 55 Platys. Go with the 55. It has the 700c wheels and it will feel plenty luxurious and quick. I ride my 55 in all my club rides, so it’s obviously zippy. My little 50 is set up for gravel and travel and I adore that little bike and it doesn’t feel small to me at ALL. But I prefer the 700c wheels and the comfort of the 55 is a bit better.

If you are asking if you should size up to a 60, unequivocally NO. It’s a big bike, and you lose the joy of a mixte if you’re negotiating that top tube with your 82 cm PBH. Also, it’s longer and more unwieldy for travel/bus racks/vehicle bike racks etc. Buying the biggest you can fit is not always the best. I know Rivendell encourages that, but they don’t factor in travel and multi-modal transportation.

And here’s how they look, set up for my PBH, which is only 1 cm less than yours. You can see how far up the seat post and bars are in these. The purple is 50, red 55.

As a short guy (79pbh) who briefly owned a 53 Susie and currently a 54.2 custom and 52 Clem L with loooooong reach, I'm going to say size up. If you like the roominess of the 56 Susie - which has a crazy-long ETT, I think you'll like the 60 Platy.

My saddle height is 73cm. I got the chance to ride the 55cm today and it felt surprisingly small. I’ll need to ride. 60 to feel it out if anyone in the Chicago area wants to meet up:) and try out a 56cm Susie

5'8" male here with an 81cm pbh. I'm on a 50 Platy with a Billie bar mounted on a 100mm Technomic.  I'm comfy on the bike though I probably, maybe could have should have waited for a 55 to come along.  That said, I love the ride!!!  (Hmm, maybe I need to "do a Leah" and have both sizes!

Steve, what a great idea. I mean, I’ll look less crazy if more people start buying multiple Platys. Hop to it.

Now Leah, two Platys would be merely eccentric.  Crazy requires a minimum of three.
