Joining RBW Owners Bunch without a Gmail address?

Is it possible to be a member of this list without using a Gmail account?

I have one, but given the number of posts and pictures people share, it quickly pushes the limit of my server space, and I have to regularly delete posts from my inbox to avoid going over the limit. I’d love to switch over to a different email, since I have other accounts with no space limits, but I can’t see how (and I don’t see anyone with a non-gmail email here).

On the members list, I see people with MSN, Yahoo, and even AOL addresses, among others.

You need to click on "My membership settings" and then click on "Subscriptions" and then click on "No email". Then just visit the website and interact with it directly.

I use the email interface, but delete 99.5% of the posts (probably 80% of those unread). If I ever want to dig something up, it's online somewhere.

In case it helps, you can also just sign up with an account you've made just for Google Groups. You can be signed in to Google Groups with that account while simultaneously being signed in to Gmail with your main account (and signed into the Gmail with the "Groups" account).

Andrew, You don't have to interact with the group through and email server however. You may or may not know that, I wouldn't know, so there's that.

I've always interacted with the group though the web interface https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch. For myself doing it through an email server is needlessly excessive and tedious. As if I don't enough to attend to ;-). While I mostly use desktop software, I can also view it on any Android mobile device on a given web browser if needed9rarely). Doing it this way my gmail is untouched. I only use gmail for interacting with members privately/personally.

FWIW, Within "my membership settings" I have both "link to my google account" and "subscribe me to email updates when I post to a conversation" unchecked, and "Subscription-choose how you can receive email from groups" set to "no email". If I want email updates to a specific conversation I can do that by checking the "subscribe" box(on the web browser version).

That’s probably going to be my backup. I do prefer to scan the list in my email app, so using just the web view isn’t going to cut it.

I honestly do not see how you join the list without going into the Google interface, and there’s no way to join there without being signed into a Gmail account. If there is another way to do it, I can’t figure it out. Maybe those on the list without Gmail accounts joined before a migration to Google?

Hi Andrew -

Back in the days of the Rivendell email list - hosted by Alex Wetmore and moderated by Rivendell employees (most notably Sterling Hada), you could subscribe with any email account. When the email list was disbanded and the Google Group was created, I subscribed with my junk email/Gmail address.

As you can imagine, this caused problems when selling stuff. People would Paypal my junk Gmail address instead of my main email address. Eventually, I tired of this and inquired of list admin Jim if it was possible to subscribe with a non-Gmail address. Jim said there were no rules or regulations requiring a Gmail address.

So I created a Google account with my main email address. I am happy to report several years later, that I see no loss of functionality throughout the Google apps. I would note that I heartily disdain use of any phone. My access of the list (and all Google apps save Chrome and Google maps) is through a desktop computer. And my desktop runs Mac OS 10.12.6 from 2014.

I get the email digest. I can post on the web and/or via email.

I see no downside to accessing the group via a non-Gmail address. I say go for it!

Thank you, good to know. But how do I create "a Google account with my main email address”? Isn’t the email address associated with with a Google account always a Gmail address?
