Does anyone have the Wald bag they make for the 137 and 139?  Just curious as to how it is as I was debating getting one.

They're great. I have both sizes. The medium is perfect for commuting. The large is great if you need to snag something extra at the store. They hold up to rain pretty well, especially if they aren't packed full and you can fold the zipper over. Not fully waterproof in sustained hard rain. Very convenient for everyday, around town use. Most the time I just plop in the bag without bungies. I haven't tried other basket bags, I don't have much to compare to, but I haven't felt much need for anything else.

+1 to Tim’s comments. I have the bigger one that I use all the time, and I really value it. Made in the USA too! I think these bags are both under rated and overlooked as people spend a lot more money on fancier offerings.

Which are you referring to?  Aside from Riv I found Troutman and Porcelain Rocket when I searched. Thanks.

If you're talking about the Shopsacks, I love them. They're one of my favorite bags on and off the bike. I don't even have a basket on my bike and I use it all the time. Pro tip: I have a rack with a mousetrap (a la the Pletscher "Clem" rack) I can just stick it under there and it will stay put.

Riv's Sackville ShopSack large and medium are likely my favorite and most used bags... for many things bike and not bike.

Medium is great for Wald 137; Large is v. large and fits Wald large basket. Durable, water resistant (water can and does go through the zipper in sustained rain). I like how the newer ones have a small zip pocket inside for wallet, keys, phone, etc.

Large makes for a nice overnight bag or beach bag.

Before COVID-19, I used the ShopSacks for grocery shopping. Perfect for that use.

I also have a ClembaSack. It's nice for the same ShopSack reasons with the limitation that the handles are just a little too short for me to pull easily over my shoulder.

Good luck!
Shoji

I think Dave was asking about the Wald-made basket bags:

Thanks Justin, yes, I was referring to the Wald made bags.  I am going to be using my old Trek 412 as a fixed gear commuter/errand bike and I was going to order a rack from Wald direct yesterday when I saw their bags.  Based on the feedback from Tim and Eric, I'm in for one.  Thanks y'all.

I don't have a shop sack, but I can offer a hearty endorsement for the Swift Sugarloaf, which I've used as a daily carry for about four years now. It's more expensive and smaller volume (I think), but also made in USA, top notch quality, nearly waterproof, and has some organization pockets etc. I'd like to have a shop sack too for groceries and the like, but I can only justify so many bags

I’m referring to any $200 bag made in San Francisco of organic hemp and compostable plastic buckles, vs. the $50 Wald bag (and that cost includes the basket).

Sorry, I just get a little burned out by bag preciousness :)

Hard to beat Wald or Carradice.

Swift is overpriced but great marketing, imo. I'll probably get criticized for saying so...

Probably. I think Swift is priced on par with other USA bagmakers at similar quality and size levels.

I also think that Swift. Outer Shell, Ruthworks, ILE, etc. are priced to allow livable wages where the bag makers live, which I think is a very important factor.

Yeah their stuff is pretty expensive, but not over-priced.  Might be overkill for a lot of people though (not unlike a $1500 lugged steel frameset ;) ). Pricing is definitely a product of quality of materials and MUSA labour, and their stuff is more labour-intensive to make than a shop sack, of course. I know they have never been racking in the dough from them, and they are struggling right now along with many companies.

There are so many good quality bag-makers for purpose-built cycling adventures these days, I love it. You can generally find a local-ish maker to support, no matter where you're living.

I bought a full set of panniers and a saddlebag from Swift when they were still working out of their house. I took the saddlebag in this summer to have the snaps replaced which they did at no charge-great people to work with. Not inexpensive, but I’d venture to guess that Wald’s labor costs are half of theirs, not to mention their rent downtown.

I just received a BXB Goldback saddlebag to use as part of my bikepacking setup. I have had many Carradice and Riv saddlebags over the years and still have a bunch but I think this one is the most well thought out and I can't find any flaws in the construction.

Is it worth the $100 or so premium over a Nelson Longflap? I think so but I like bags and am willing to pay a bit more for minor improvements. Which is why I own a Riv or two I guess. I doubt I'll ever own any Berthoud bags but I definitely appreciate their work. Beautiful bags.

I am missing a Wald bag in my bag pile so maybe it's time to get that hole filled.

I agree with Eric and with most of the comments in response about the value of the local bags. It's great that the market meets so many needs. What I have issue with is the contradiction between wanting to widen the scope of biking past the stereotypes (roadie, etc) but then pushing marketing/style that effectively excludes those that either can't afford top shelf or that enjoy riding but just aren't obsessed with bikes and bike stuff. When do we invite the basic family bike shop Wald/Jandd/cheaper yet folks to the groovy Instagram party?

I don't expect manufacturers to not market their products, but being inclusive as a community might mean we don't need all our stuff to be exclusive.

Looked up Wald--nothing, Jandd has a Jandd-jp account with 428
followers. Swift has 57.2K followers, and there's no need to follow them
since their message is multiplied by influencers and happy customers.
Clearly it's up to the companies to do their marketing consistent with
their price points, and kudos to Swift for their products and marketing.

My point is that while developing markets for high end stuff is good for
the diversity of the marketplace, it has the unfortunate downside of
training people to think that perfectly good or maybe even excellent
ordinary stuff is not quite good enough which raises the bar for people
of modest means or those traditionally less represented among bike
riders to join the party. I don't mean to discount the LBSs, coops, and
coalitions doing great work to get and keep people riding and smiling at
modest cost. Any support for Taiwanese Fender Day?

Shameless self promotion here, but Analog sells the Fifth Season Squall sack which is everything Eric loathes.  US made waxed cotton, brass hardware, the only plastics are in the thread.  Plastic fabrics don't age well.  Made by one dude in Maine with a treadle powered sewing machine.  Roll top, weather proof, super simple.  We also have the Vortex sack, which is just a bigger Squall sack for 139 baskets.  - James / Analog Cycles / Fifth Season Canvas / Discord Components / Tanglefoot Cycles

Carl, I hear you. Sometimes these objects do feel like they create an exclusive culture. I would argue that they are just part of one of the many bicycling subcultures that exist in our consumer capitalist culture. However, those cyclists don’t represent the everyday bicyclist and those objects may be a part of a different purchasing decision making process.

It’s likely that many ordinary people who ride and use jand or Wald products don’t even interact with instagram bicycle culture, so those companies don’t need to market their goods on that platform. I’m sure that if those companies saw an economic benefit in joining that platform they would. It also helps that those older companies have relationships developed with bike shops across the country and have been making bike products for a long time, which helps with their established distribution channels.

For younger bicycle businesses, like swift makeshifter and bags x bird, IG is a relatively free promotional platform to reach people who may be interested in their handcrafted goods. These items are only seen as high end because their price reflects the real price of a small group of people making hand crafted items with quality materials at a smaller scale(something I have learned as the partner of an owner of a small scale clothing line owner). They are talking directly to and with the bicycle culture that may be interested in their goods on that platform. I’m thankful that they have that platform to be able to make their businesses a reality. I am sure a significant portion of their sales comes from that platform. I just bought a saddle bag from make shifter, because I believe in paying up for a product made by a person I can talk directly with. It’s the same reason why I buy rivendells. It’s a privilege for sure, but one that I believe is important.

It’s tough because that IG culture does feel like it leaves a lot of folks out. However, like any subculture of folks interested in a practice, it only looks like it is more predominant because they are saavy media users. I would liken it to the punk subculture or the Grateful Dead subculture. I suppose that’s why I like this list a lot. It’s united by a just ride ethos, rather than an object. There are a ton of people on this list that have riv-I-fied their non-riv bikes. However, I suppose that we are another bike subculture that also appears exclusive to other folks looking at us. I know I have felt like my lack of technical expertise made me a riv-rider that didn’t quite fit.

Anyways, I hope this all makes sense. I just wanted to add my two cents worth of thoughts. Feel free to throw it in the dustbin of history if it isn’t useful to y’all. All my best to all of you and your families.
