If you saw Riv’s IG today, you will have seen a RivSister named Sarah holding her custom yellow Platy aloft, PlatyPosing, as we RivSisters like to say.

Sarah isn’t wild about learning to post to this platform, and since we talk on the DMs all day (stolen moments, as we’re both nurses and mothers) about our Platys, she figured I’d know enough to post about her new bike on her behalf.

And because I only know how to embed photos in the text after the initial post, I’m going to continue this in the next one. Be right back…

Sarah fell for Rivendell when she got her Atlantis in 2022. She got it to chase her teenager around on gravel and single track. Eventually she wanted something lighter that she could take on longer rides, and perhaps on group rides. She decided she wanted a Platypus. She found me on Instagram, saw that I had a custom color Platypus and decided she wanted one, too. Riv had none in stock, but we found one 55cm mermaid Platypus frame at Crust, and she snapped it up.

Sarah wanted yellow for her Platypus because it’s a joyful color and matches how she feels when riding. She scoured paint swatches online and discovered “Primrose”, which she saw on a ‘59 Sprite. She knew immediately when she saw it - THIS was her yellow.

She said, “I made an appointment with Rick Stefani at D&D Cycles in San Lorenzo. He suggested we use a slightly more saturated yellow to make sure there was good contrast with the cream accents…and also because we were doing a pearl finish which would tone down the color. The color we used was 8550, ‘Chrome Yellow.’”

She brought the mermaid frame, still boxed, to Rick. “I asked not to see my bike because I knew the mermaid was already a pretty color. It felt a little wrong to sandblast that off.”

About a month later, this was in her backseat:

Sarah took the frame to Rivendell, and they built it for her to be a light-ish, sporty bike. It has an RBW 51 rack on the back, for light duty. She also got dyno lighting and Rich-built wheels.

Pops of purple dot the bike - pedals, valve stem caps (from RivSister Roberta) and bar tape from Tanglefoot Cycles (“Starry Night”).

I love that there is similarity between our bikes, besides being custom colors, we both have gray Ultradynamico tires, white Ergon grips, ivory Rivet saddles, and the same rear rack. In fact, Sarah coined the term “Rainbow Platys” for custom-color Rivendell Platypuses. I’m definitely using that hashtag on IG. We only know of two others - a root beer Platypus shown in the background of one of Grant’s photos, and Heather’s Pumpkin Platy, out in one of the Carolinas. But we’d like this to be a trend, because it is SO FUN to choose a paint color and all the colors in the accessories. We think (Sarah’s idea) Grant should order some naked frames for RivSisters to make Rainbow Platys out of them. You know…in case anyone is listening…

Sarah has been riding o’er hill and dale today and sent a few photos. I’ll leave you with these.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy these pictures of Sarah’s lovely new Rainbow Platy.
