Hello All,

I have been lurking here for a bit, but now with a new Clem frame set on the way, I am posting for the first time.

I’m a commuter in NYC, where the streets can be, um, bumpy.  I ride daily in all weather, but distances aren’t high, usually 5 to 30 miles a day.  I am also not wealthy, so I’m trying to build this bike in a sensible but economical way.  I will put money towards parts that need higher quality, but will always look for ways to cut cost.

Regarding wheels, I’m a bit stunned by the range in prices.  please tell me why I shouldn’t buy this cheap set?  If not and if you were me, what would you look at?

Finally, if anyone has parts they would part with, I’m in the market!  Swept back, low- or no-rise bars, like the Billie or Albatross.  Brakes, racks, derailleurs, etc.  Consumable drive train parts I’ll buy new.  I’ve got a crankset, brake levers and shifters so far.

Thank you for your help!

Best,

Noah

In my experience almost all lower end (cheaper) Shimano parts work really well. That Altus derailer is great, the standard MTB levers are great, there are cheap thumb shifters that work great, the cheaper v brakes are great. Splurge on nice tires and a nice saddle. Go budget with everything else. This is, obviously, just my opinion.

Welcome to the list. Please post a photo of your Clem.

It used to be that cheap wheels were machine built, and that the cheaper the wheels, the less hand truing. And $155 is pretty cheap! But perhaps machine built wheels are better now? I've not bought machine-built wheels for decades.

The components of those wheels are good, though, from what I hear.

I agree: spend money on good tires.

Your link is for a disc brake wheel set, maybe they have a rim brake version.

When I built up my Clem frameset recently I used a link from this forum to an Ebay seller of Velocity NoBS rimmed wheels - about $205 for the pair. I have WTB All terrain 26x1.95 tires on them. Rims are fine, which the slight caveat that they are Schraeder drilled, so I use a set of Wheels Manufacturing rim converters to use the inner tubes I already had.

I’ve had fine luck with machine built wheels, and a human can check them over once you get them.

Don’t be afraid to make a WTB post here too.

Those wheels look just fine, one thing you might want to consider is tubeless compatibility. I ride every day in NYC (up until today when a slick spot in Queens led to a busted clavicle), and tubeless has been a total game changer. Add sealant every so often and Bob's your uncle.
I wish orange seal made bone marrow...

As Dorothy already pointed out, the Clem uses V brake rims. Disc rims won't have the brake track your Clem is designed for leading to a number of safety issues.

The wheels linked are both disc and rim brake compatible. They should work fine with the Clem. They're quite heavy, but probably pretty bomber.

Noah, check my FS post for derailers cheap. That XT rear and Microshift front would fit your frame and look and work good doing it.

if it were me, i would see if i could find a used wheelset at the same pricepoint but with more classic parts (non-disc hubs, more silver parts). you could, as someone else mentioned, do a want-to-buy post for a wheelset at $150.

I bought those wheels and have been riding them hard on my MTBubbe. They were true and round out of the box and have stayed that way for over 100 miles of Rocky single track and jumps.

I set them up tubeless with Neo Motos. They work fine. I did have to build up the rim bed with 2 to 3 layers of tape, but the seal is holding without a problem.

It's a great value for a very versatile wheelset.

Noah, what size wheelset do you need? Which size clem did you get? If it was the 52/650b model i may have. Wheelset for a good price. If you’re interested pm me.

Thanks Eric! I didn't spot the fact the rims have a brake track. As you all were....

Hello All,
Thanks for all the helpful replies!  I posted an earlier reply, with some pics (of another bike), which is either still awaiting moderation, or got lost.
Kai, I hope you are not in pain!  I've been following your posts regarding tubeless, I think I need to study up!
Dorothy, may I trouble you to refer that ebay wheel vendor to me?
Patrick, my Clem is shipping out next week.  I'll be sure to keep you updated.  Pics of my 80's Dawes (alas, about to be demoted to second string) are what held up my earlier post.

More later, enjoy the holiday!
Best,
Noah

Thanks for everyone's thoughts!
If I read it right, the wheel set I linked to had rim-brake rims, while the hubs would accept disc brakes. Please confirm if I'm wrong.
Kai, your posts here and previously on the forum have me considering tubeless.  I'll have to study...  And sorry to hear of your fall, I hope you're not in too much pain!
Dorothy, could I trouble you for a link to the Velocity wheel ebay vendor?
And Patrick, the Clem is scheduled to ship out on Monday, so no pics yet.  Would you accept the bike I'm retiring?
Non Riv content:  Dawes Super Galaxy, built by a friend in about '86, well ridden since.  I was hit last spring, the LBS tried to bend the frame back, got about 75% of the way there.  It hasn't felt right since.  Also, my knees and I are ready to leave the 'sport-tourer' behind and slow down, just a little.

I have a spare set of Albatross bars with with a newish Nitto stem, cheapo Shimano levers, and a sun race friction shifter, all from Riv. Let me know if you’re interested. I can give you a good price. I live in Brooklyn.

I have some spare pedals and other things to that may be of interest in setting up the bike. Again happy to give a good deal.

Hi Nerl,

I have a bunch of miscellaneous parts including bars, stems, pedals, etc. But I'm not as smart or organized as anyone else on the list. I live in Park Slope on St Marks Pl. You are free to check out my basement and pick amongst my bits and pieces. Maybe between Justin and me you can get most of what you need.

Bob, I sent you a PM regarding the wheels if they aren’t needed by the OP.
