I'm such a big fan of taking pics on my rides.

It's fun to see others pics from their rides as well.

This list does some of that but it would be great to see even more.

From yesterday's ride after mounting new
700x43 Gravel King SS tires on my orange Sam.

Only did 8 miles but tires felt outstanding.

I was out & about yesterday evening myself, not telling you anything you don't already know here...it was hot! It was close to 2 hours for me & maybe not the smartest decision.

Not Riv so making a separate thread.

Paul: very well done photos; thanks for sharing.

I miss Patrick whatsis name's photos from the general Pike's Peak area.

I enjoy the pictures of the bikes and the landscapes, but I also enjoy, as far as I can appreciate them in my state of nescience about the craft, the "formal" qualities of the photos -- composition, lighting, clarity, coloring and so on. The qualities of "untweaked" photographs interest me far, far more than manipulations of "base" photographs.

Rode today, thunderstorms approaching and sauna like conditions. Suffered and probably should have stayed home but thought I'd add to the photo stream;

Swiss Avenue - a unique historic district and my former home, and although most famous for its restored mansions a little known & unassuming apartment was the operational center and home of Ron Roodrooff of Dallas Buyer's Club fame.

Originally a depression-era WPA project the Stone Tables at White Rock Lake have recently been restored. As thunder was threatening they were largely deserted but most weekends are full of family celebrations. Just how many picnics and cookouts have these tables seen over nearly 100 years?

Thanks Patrick.
I also miss Deacon Jones posts and pictures. He certainly has a significant skill in capturing stunning pics riding in the Pikes Peak area.

He still has a website I think under Deacon Patrick. A search should pop it up.

Cool pics and historical perspective Philip!

I've ridden up and down Swiss Avenue many times and always enjoy it.

Also your Platypus looks terrific!

Yeah, the heat and humidity. It does get to me also.

A break this week with slightly cooler temps...thank the Lord.
I measured 1.1 inches of rain yesterday and last night.

I got to be the shirtless guy taking a picture of his bike in the River today.
Found a new to me section of the American River that’s just deep enough to float and just shallow enough not to drown. Went full Huck Finn, carrying my bike through some sections downstream before getting lost and having to double back.
This was the turnaround of a fairly spirited ride on a warm day, so the swim was much appreciated.

I'm away from my bikes tending to family health issues, really wanting for a nice long ride like this. This was a weekend trip on my Rambouillet down the Great Allegheny Passage to Cumberland, MD with a Sunday night Amtrak shuttle home.

Yesterday we got out before the triple digit temps. We hit up two local parks, had a blast on the swings, kicked a ball all over the park and ate snacks in the shade of some huge cedars! (Don’t worry, we didn’t leave the hat behind)

Andy,
Looks like a perfect summer GAP ride getting out to enjoy the season.  I notice your extra bottle cage underneath.  I just tried mine on the Mermaid Platy and it interferes with the cables running under the bottom tube.  Do I need a different cage or some special spacers?  I got the cage from Riv when I got the bike a few weeks ago.
Still dreaming of the GAP ride

Kate,

Three is the magic number of big bottles for distances between water sources on summer GAP rides for me. It does mean I have to stop to rotate their positions as I drink them which is not a bad thing.

Sounds like you need to get some longer screws for the bottle cages with some spacer washers to get the base of the cages away from the downtube enough to clear the cables on their run to the bottom bracket.

Only consequence may be that the bottle in that cage's clearance is a few millimeters closer to the front tire/fender.

Looking for pictures of you and your Platy out there in full deployment!

I was able to solve this same problem with a couple of presta valve “nuts” under the bottle cage to space it out juuuust enough to clear the cable while using the same bottle cage bolts. The presta valve nut as a spacer is by no means a new concept, but I can’t help but marvel at their versatility; it’s safe to say that they solve a problem for me at least once a week.

Paul, I've only once ever seen another Riv in Dallas, but now that I know you are here, maybe we will cross paths someday.  During the week, I can be found commuting from about downtown to and back Addison via White Rock, and on the weekend I'm down in Cedar Hill. But right now, my bike is awaiting a new bottom bracket cup...such little things.

Some great looking pics and great looking bikes?

Marc, if you see this I like how your blue Hillbourne is set up.

Are those Bosco bars?  The knobs seem like a good idea.

I've run interrupter / cross brake levers on quite a few road bars and like them a lot but not an upright bar.

What do you think of them?

Fred, good to hear from you.

So far I know of Philip, Luis, two Jim's, myself, yourself and Wilson I met a couple weeks ago that all have Rivs in the area.

There may be some I'm overlooking or am unaware of.

And Fran that formerly ran Transit bike shop did have one, a Hunqapillar I think.

They sold Rivs there. Hated to see it close.

Are there any shops in Dallas- Ft Worth area that still carry Rivs?

I'm unaware of any.

At a population of 6 million plus and growing it's a shame if there is not.

Another weekend, another trip up into my favourite valley!  With select friends this time.  And no front fender - because I had the dreaded stick-in-the-fender crumple, over the bars at speed situation last weekend... solo, 25 km from cell service and about 6km from any trail that I'd be likely to see another person before nightfall. I learned more than one lesson that day.

A few shots from the first ride on my new-to-me Susie W. Longbolts. The smoke finally cleared enough here in Napa to get out for a longer ride. I spent the evening cruising around the trails at a local park, adjusting and getting everything dialed in on the new build. I love this bike so far.  It's swoopy, smooth, and handles rocky trails and singletrack with ease.  It's surprisingly agile, even with the long wheelbase and big tires. I had a lot of fun on it tonight and can't wait to get it out on even longer rides.

From a ride a two months back around White Rock Lake with friend Jim (Riv list follower) on his Homer and me on my orange Sam. Friend Luis was on this ride also but not sure why we didn't get his Homer in pic.

This is with the spillway in the background.

It's between 9 and 10 miles around this in city lake and its heavily used by cyclists, runners, walkers, etc.

It's a wonderful resource within the city but can get crowded at peak times on weekends.

This is probably my favorite background in my general area to take a bike pic.

If I recall correctly there are 116 Magnolia trees bordering these fountains at the University of Texas at Dallas campus.

I was on my Miele bike known as my 'grocery getter' on this day.

The very slack angles are what attracted me to this bike.

They come in an aluminum alloy and a cromo steel version .

Paul in Dallas asked:

Anyone ever bring in their bike for a professional photo?

While not photographic, I did see a portraitist, Taliah Lempert,  who rendered folks' bikes at the 2019 Philadelphia Bike Expo. First saw her pieces here when Johnny Coast had one from her posted on his IG feed.

I thought the interpretive aspect of painting portraiture was interesting, especially when I can see that her eye is caught by details I would focus on without becoming a colorized Rebour work.

Lovely. Thanks for sharing. And, good to see a good ol' Romulus.

Someone besides me should produce an expensive, large-format coffee-table book featuring the best "Share Your Riv" photos, with loving descriptions of frame and build to accompany the photos. A Rivendell answer to BQ's library.

Photos like these make me want to overcome my habitual incompetence in the art.

Hi Mike,

I'm a sucker for classic machines like this so I'll second Patrick's compliment on your gorgeous Romulus. Thoughtfully assembled as well with a thoroughly broken in Brooks. The second photograph is a real grabber with the colors and your lean, elegant Rom in front of that field of massive leaves. Thanks for making my day!

Empire Ranch  https://www.empireranchfoundation.org/   50 miles south of Tucson in the AZ grasslands, about 4500' elevation. So cool to have places like this within riding and/or driving distance from your chosen urban quagmire. Escape to past times and beautiful places is pretty easy.  Ranch was started sometime in the 1870's (in Apache Country!). Just about every desert critter you can imagine calls it home.

If it was in my Flickr stream, it was my 2015 AWOL, going the eventual way of all AWOLs it seems,  cracked at the seat tube/downtube Junction.  That is new for me as I usually crack frames at the bottom bracket area.

Since Specialized did not have a replacement frame with same hub spacings, etc., of the AWOL, they gave me an entire new Diverge, which is turning out to be a pretty fun ride.

Jason,
I bought the bike on the list about two-three years ago and proceeded to test out many different configurations and gearing options:
  • Bars I tried:  Bullmoose, Albatross, flat, Noodle, Hwy 1 – currently settled on Hwy 1.
  • Portage I tried:  Sackville (saddle bags, front bags, other bags in size XS-S-M-L), Acorn (saddle and front bags), Clem basket, Racer basket, Nitto racks f&r – currently settled on just Acorn saddle bag.
  • Brakes I tried:  Tektro 720, Shimano XC-50, Paul MiniMoto, Shimano V – currently settled on Shimano V with Tektro long-pull levers.
  • Fenders I tried:  SKS, Honjo, VO – currently settled on VO hammered.
  • Cranks I tried:  175 mm White Ind. ENO / Double-Double, 175 mm Shimano 7701 Track, 170 mm Sugino Mighty Tour, 170 mm Sun XCD, 170 mm Sugino RD2, 172.5 & 170 mm Mavic 631 – currently settled on 170 mm Mavic 631 "Starfish" cranks, modded to take regular rings.
  • Tires I tried:  Continental "basketball" (42 mm / 40 mm true), Nokian studded (32 mm), RH Barlow Pass (38 mm), Vittoria Cross XN (32 mm), Grand Bois Cypress (30 mm) – currently settled on Barlow Pass.
  • Cogs / gearing I tried:  White Ind. ENO / Double-Double, Phil Wood track, DuraAce track, Surly Dingle, Shimano FW, in 35/38 x 16/19,17/20; 45x16; 46x17; 39x15; 42x16; 50x18; 53x19 – currently settled on 42x16 fixed gear.
In the past couple of years I seem to have averaged 3-3.5k miles per year, 90% being on dirt roads in SE Michigan, early in the morning, with about 37 ft / mile elevation gain. My "Straverage" speed for these rides ends up being in the 16-18 mph range, depending on how little sleep I get and how beat up the road is, both of which are highly seasonal and variable. The steepest hill around here that I encounter regularly is about 7-8%, and that goes for less than half a mile. I can do this sort of hill in 42x16 and sometimes even in 52x19 or 50x18, but need to climb out of the saddle. If I'm really going for it, Strava estimates my output in the 250-320 Watt range, but I have no idea how takes into account road conditions and wind. There might be one or two of those on a typical 50-ish mile Saturday morning ride, which ends up taking about 3 hours of moving time, with one stop for pastries and coffee to shake things up. The long-ago casual racer Fred / geek / engineer in me wants to try a power meter to see what the reality is, and the middle-aged dad in me just enjoys the "just right" feeling that a 42x16 gear always seems to bring.  I have more than one bike, and had as many as 4 set up single-speed / fixed gear at one point this year. I will say that about 90% of the rides this year have been on a single-speed / fixed gear bike, and about 1,000 miles in the last 2 years were specifically on the Simple One, mixing up picnics and commutes with loaded bags, fast morning sprints before anyone wakes up, casual sunset strolls, and weekend morning rides with a saddlebag to get my yayas out and bring back some fresh pastries for the kiddoes. The SimpleOne isn't *quite* as fast up a hill as my stripped-down Colnago Super with skinny tires, but it is no slouch. It is quite a smooth-riding, but also agile bike. Running a fixed gear ends up being a bit faster uphill for me than a freewheelin' 1x1, and I don't give up too much on the downhills, where I pretend I'm a hamster on crack – my fastest time on a couple of third-/half-mile long downhills here is about 37±1 mph, and if my gear calculation geekery is correct, topping out at about 180-190 rpm. My 30, 40, 50-mile rides on fixed gear bikes end up being just as fast (or slow, as the case more often is) as rides on multi-geared bikes, which probably speaks more to the local topography than the rider, so YMMV.

Can't attach too many photos due to size limits, but here's a couple of views.

Old School time, a day late for Throwback Thursday, if that's still a thing.

'98 Riv Custom, built by Joe Starck, back in the day when designing/building a short-reach caliper frame with rock-bottom brake shoes ("Look out, Courageous, it's Rock Bottom!!!") and clearance for 32mm 700c tires was a big f'in deal.  If I got this part right, the lugs were designed by e-richie for Grant/Bridgestone, were nixed by B'stone Japan because they were too complex/expensive, then Grant was able to use them after going indy. The seatpost caps look like they're from Waterford, maybe a carry-over from early on when Gary Boulanger was managing the W'ford side of Riv production frames? I've got them on a couple/few later W'fords, and don't recall seeing them anywhere else.

I think I'm only the 3rd owner, unsure of the mileage, but clearly the two previous owners have treated it nicely. I criminally barely put any miles on it, but I did recently crash up on it and cause a bunch of organic physical body damage, but nothing but small qr-end/pedal-end/bar-end scuffs on the bike itself. It's lived a charmed life.

Was trying for a relatively period-correct build, with as much shiny silver Dura-Ace as possible, and somehow the med/long-cage D-A rder had to make that cut. Which made my preferred 1x build impractical, so I messed around with 1x-granny setups till I got this 40x24. Would'vd preferred a 38t, but couldn't go lower than 40t on the outer ring, because of chainstay clearance. Even with a short-cage CX-70, a 38/39t ring scrapes the top of the chainstay before the teeth get close enough to the rings. I tried at least one of the mega-short-but-clunky modern Shimano ATB fders, but that was sub-optimal. I think that was a midnight oil-burning operation, so I can't remember exactly why I gave up, just remember a loud "Feh!" and yanking it off. I decided to use a protective chain-drop thingie just to make sure I didn't have any drop-off problems hitting the 24t granny. Ferget who made it, it was a one-man small Sumguy operation, but they've been in production since the '80s, and discontinued for a while now.

The 700c Soma SV SLs on skinny Aerohead rims are about 30mm actual width, and already a bit tight. Could probably go a full 32mm but with very tight front/rear caliper clearance. Short-reach centerpulls, like GC450s might help a bit there, but I wanted to stay D-A on the calipers and avoid the extra cabling/etc of centerpulls.

The RD-7701 med-long rder came to me with a stripped cable anchor bolt, and the stupid-shallow backside clearance made it pretty impossible to helicoil it. I managed to tap it from M5 to M6, and the bigger M6 bolt looks a little clunky, but it properly anchors the cable now.

Front end has a proper D-A stem and fairly uncommon and wide Nitto B177-48cm Dream Bars. Prolly coulda gone with non-aero D-A brake levers, but I usually want 'cross levers for Jersey traffic, so I went aero there. Nitto Racing cages 'cause it felt more racey. I kinda mostly/only ride Thomson posts, so no D-A there. The Brooks Team Pro is a dark green, though that doesn't show well in the pix.

It's a little on the tall/long side for me, 63cm dt c-c, 60.5cm tt, which is kinda de rigueur in Riv Land these days but was maybe a little less common back then. BB drop is 76mm, chainstays are longish at 44cm and wb is 104cm, so a crit bike it ain't.

Pix or it didn't happen, more and higher-res on flickr.....

Forgot to mention the cassette spec is 10spd 11-30t, so 11/40 high and 30/24 low. High enough for me, plenty low for a mostly unloaded sled.

22.3lbs as is, with several spec subs that would get it into the 21lb+ range. Could go more modern and down in the 20s, but I like the older school look.

And yeah, better to say "...clearance for 30mm tires..." since 32s are getting dicey.

I had issues posting the photos, gotta click to view 'em, will see if cutting the [img] tags fixes that...

Hello Paul,

Gorgeous bike and photos to boot. Thank you for the component details as well.

Your description of the CX-70 front derailer touching the chainstay is particularly timely. I'm doing a build now where the derailer/chainstay kiss each other - or within a whisker or two of that so I've wondered, how close is too close? Like you, I have the option of a perfectly functional but less attractive shorter cage der but would prefer using the vintage (silver of course) longer cage model. From the pictures it would appear the CX-70-chainstay marriage is working out well so I have hopes for my combo.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Best,
