Recently a James on this List wanted a 60 cm Cheviot. Pam (who always wants everyone to find their Rivendell and get riding) asked me to help find one. I knew it would be difficult, and while I didn’t find him one, Kim found him TWO, and in James’ preferred color. Happy ending.

Anyway, it seems to me (I might be wrong) that Cheviots are rarely for sale. I think they were made from 2014-2019, so they did have a good run. Is it that their owners keep them? Or are there really just so few? Maybe more of them belong to women, and maybe women don’t sell bikes as often as men do?

Why is it so hard to find a Cheviot on the used market? This is what I want to know.

My completely wild guess with no facts to back it up - when has this ever stopped me?! - is low volume. The timeline you describe is pre-pandemic boom and, I think, pre-the more widely held acceptance of low stepover frames as a thing dudes ride. Now there's Clem Ls and Platys as far as the eye can see - we don't even have the Clem H anymore - because Riv hit their bike boom and everybody rides low step!

I sold my Chev back in 2021 to get a Clem because I wanted bigger tire clearance and v-brakes. Then the Platypus came out, which was essentially a Chev with nominally bigger tire clearance and v-brake posts, so I switched back. I would ride a Cheviot again, but prefer the Platypus.

Jason on this list has my old Cheviot and, I think, uses it as a daily commuter. He may be willing to sell it, though. It's a good bike and the last time I saw it was in great condition and nice build.

I'm a proud Cheviot owner -- it was my first Riv, actually, purchased in 2020 from the fine folks at Maine Bike Works -- and can say with confidence that I will never part with it. : ) My guess is I'm not alone!

I love my 50 cm Cheviot (2015). My first good bike and it changed riding for me. I may be considering selling because my husband will likely be getting a Clem L or Platypus and I will need to be able ride the same terrain as him so I may want bigger tires.

My wife has a 55cm Cheviot that hasn’t seen a lot of use — she’s happier on an e-bike. We’re not necessarily looking to sell, but if this is a rare/desirable model I’m sure she’d have no problem selling it somebody who will ride and appreciate it more.

My Chev ownership is only months long and I appreciate its utility, beauty, and charm. I've set it up similarly to the "do-it-all" from the Chev brochure, minus the fenders. At a 60cm frame, it's a bigger bike but no worries due to the step-through. I'm very happy to own this bicycle.

Hi Leah! You initially connected me with Jared in California, who shipped me his Cheviot, which I had fitted out for me here in Western New York. I wanted to get another one for a family member, which I acquired in Philadelphia in the summer of 22. The family member subsequently got something else, so now I have two. I’m thinking I will sell one at some point in the near future. In the meantime, totally enjoying my ride (s) image0.jpegimage1.jpeg

I love my Cheviot & don't see myself selling it. The novelty seeking side of me was/is curious about the Platypus but I don't really see a functional difference between the two (unless you're splitting hairs about tire clearance and cantilever-posts) and I like the urbane look of the Cheviot. My wife has a Platypus and loves it too. The Platypus/Cheviot are maybe my favorite Rivendells ever made with the old Toyo Atlantis/Roadini (which my wife also owns) being tied for second. Here's my 60...

I love the Cheviots and I think they are so regal. This color is one of my favorites, too.

Here is mine this afternoon..
I love my Cheviot.
I love my Cheviot a bit more than I love my Betty Foy (team long chain stay).
I will probably love a Platypus more than I love my Cheviot; I maxed out the tires at 55mm and I my sweet spot is 65. I want both the clearance and v-brake/canti studs a Platy offers.

Cheers!
