Good morning!
I've wanted a zippier second bike to complement my lovely Atlantis for a while now, and I finally got one! Up until a couple weeks ago, I made it my plan to buy a Homer frame when they eventually get released, pay for frame prepping, and stash it in my basement, and amass parts over the winter to build it up. But...this lovely Samuel Hillborne came up for sale on eBay and it just felt meant to be. To top it off, the seller was a 3 hour drive away. Long story short, I got it!

The build is what they used to call "700 Drop Bar Sam Jumbo" Build Kit...it's a 9" stem instead of the listed 11". Nothing super fancy, but all quality! It took me a solid four days to notice the headbage is upside down...not sure I really care, but I did find an RJ the Bike Guy video on headbadge removal/installation if it does end up bugging me.

Here is where I could use some help/recommendations...
1. I know I want different tires. It has 40mm Marathon Supremes that measure only 38-39mm. I can't get a 42mm Shikoro in there without contact and trying to adjust the fender. I would like to keep the fenders on for now. I like the Shikoros I have on my Atlantis enough to just get a pair of 38mm and call it a day, but maybe I don't need quite that tough of a tire for paved bike trails, crushed limestone trails, light gravel/dirt roads, etc... What do you like?

2. If you bought an 8 year old bike with all-original parts, would you freshen up the cables/housing or would you just ride until you have a problem?

3. It might be kind of fun to throw on some Silver shifters while I'm at it. I like the Shimano Dura-Ace shifters fine, but the Riv website says their downtube Silver Shifters can be put on the Shimano pods. Has anyone any advice or warnings about doing this?

Ben:

I would certainly change the brake cables. If the housings look ok, leave them (especially since changing them would require losing that nice tape/twine job). Brake cables fail; housings just get rusty and old.

If the shifter cables look good, you can probably leave them in place. Look where the cables go under the bottom bracket. That’s where they will usually get rusty and old first. If they look good and work smoothly, apply a little oil (such as Phil’s) at the BB shell and leave them. Again, if the housings look good, no need to replace them.

Brakes are much more important than shifting—take care of them first!

that's a great looking bike.  congrats!

i swapped out dura-ace barends for silver1 (downtube) shifters on my homer without issue.  totally straightforward.  if you do so and are looking to rehome the shimanos, i'll take 'em off your hands!

in my experience, you can't go wrong with the 38mm rene herse tires, especially if you're looking to zippy it up and complement the atlantis.  they'd almost certainly feel livelier than the schwalbes.

38mm Barlow Pass fit fine with fenders on my 62cm Sam with sidepull brakes.  44mm Snoqualmie Pass only fit when the fenders were removed.

Schwalbe Marathon Racers come in a 38, which will be more like a 36 or so depending on the rim. I ride the 35's, 33.3 actual on 19mm ID rims, and they ride very nicely, and they last. The only other tire I had that lasted like these is the Big Ben raceguard ones. I ride mine @35-40 rear, 30-35 front.

Some good suggestions coming in!

I'm VERY interested in the Barlow Pass in the endurance casing. Aesthetically speaking, the RH tires can't be topped. But...I think I might go with the Gravelkings when it comes time.

Just installed some 700x38 Gravelking Sk's on a project bike.

Haven't had a chance to ride it yet but they seem like a nice product, especially for the price.

Measured in at 35.5 on some old Super Champion rims.

If the head badge was put on upside down right from Rivendell, I personally would keep it that way. I find such accidental anomalies charming and perhaps even a good luck talisman.

I have to say I really appreciate the sage green paint. Congratulations on the new purchase.

In terms of the cables - just inspect for any frayed or broken strands. But, if all looks good and all cables operate smoothly, there's probably no need to change them. If you do decide to change them anyway, I would recommend teflon coated ones. They glide nicely and only cost a little extra.

Nice looking bike!

As to cables and shifters - you can put Silver shifters on Shimano pods but you have to grind off the little tab on the pod. There are instructions at the Rivendell site. It's because the Shimano and Silver sit on the pod differently. Took me a while to figure that out.

As to cables, if it's all stock, then yeah, replacing brake cables is probably worth it for peace of mind.

And Barlow Pass tires should fit under the fenders (they did on mine). However, I would just go with Shikoros.

does that tab incompatibility issue apply to silver1 shifters, or just the newer silver2s?  i did exactly the swap ben mentioned in his original post without grinding.

Hey Paul...
Just to clarify, you put Sliver1 (DT) shifters on your Shimano bar ends?

whoa, no, i totally lied.  i'm sorry.  i pulled up my old invoice and it looks like back in the day they sold a kit that included the shifters and the pods, which is what i used.

No worries at all!

If anyone can find the tutorial on grinding down the tab on the Shimano bar end pod, I'm struggling to find it on Riv's website. I thought it was on one of the pages for the shifters themselves, but not seeing them there or on the Shimano Dura-Ace page.

Another thumbs up for the Gravel King 38 slicks.  Have a pair on my canti-Rom and they are really fast and comfy smooth at 35-40 psi, super-great tires.  I've not ridden any RH tires and they may be even better but these are so nice I have no desire to spend the money to find out.

Most people would probably disagree with me but after using Parimotos, Gravel King slicks and RH tires I don't think the RH are worth all of the extra money.  They are the nicest of those three but not by enough to make me spend the money for them. I don't regret spending the money and enjoy the set I am riding but I don't think I would spend it again. For 650B I don't think there is a better value than the Parimoto tires. People say they flat really easily and maybe that is the case in some riding conditions but I can't remember the last time I got a flat on one. I must have decent road conditions as I really don't get flats on any tires. For 700C I would go with the Gravel Kings. Just my opinion of course.

While we're being contrary, I'd keep the Shimano clickers. They work great and the front is already friction anyway. Some would choose differently! 😬

The Gravelkings are more and more intriguing to me. One person on this thread mentioned they are more like 35mm installed on older Super Champion rims (which I'm guessing are much more narrow than the Atlas rims I have).

Has anyone put the 38cm Gravelking Slicks and measured how wide they are installed?

Thanks,
Ben

Joe,
Funny you say that...I just decided not to mess with the shifters. I don't want the hassle of grinding off the tab on the shimano pods, and I don't want to buy new Silver pods AND shifters when I have perfectly working shifting as is for the sake of a slightly "blingy-er" cockpit.

Hey Ben,

I mounted a new pair of Gravelking slick 700c x 38's on my single speed bike about two months ago and am really liking them a lot. I ride mostly paved country roads with a bit of smooth dirt trails thrown in. They measure 37.5mm on 23mm rims (outer width). Hope that helps. Cheers,

Awesome! Very helpful…the Atlas is a little wider so I’m guessing the GKs will be 38 or a touch more mounted.

Thanks!
