Suggestions for a looooong saddlebag stand-off, ~120 mm long?

Double-posting from the iBoblist, in case anyone on this saddlebag-heavy list has any ideas.

Thanks.

Actually, for a Carradice saddlebag support: https://carradice.co.uk/shop/accessories/saddle-bag-rack/

It won't work well as designed with VO loops on my Flite saddle (it would work but tilt the bag severely) but I've found what I think is a good workaround. But for the workaround to work the support has to held off at the bottom by about 4-5" from the seatpost.

I'd be grateful for others' ideas and photos. Aesthetics are important, as is sturdiness and easy on/off.

Thanks.

Aside, anecdote, funny, may be ignored: I tried it with the as-designed prongs, meant to fit into B17 loops and support the support. They probably would have worked with the VO loops, but again this would have tilted the shelf sharply. The prongs were bent at the tops toward the support and away from the seat rails. I thought, "Surely they would work better if reversed to act more like hooks?"

So I did that; hard work since they're thick metal. Nope. The bend is meant to press against the saddle rails and in doing this hold the support to the saddle securely. Oh well. But straps on the top rail will work better, with said standoff.

I had a local framebuilder braze one for me out of CrMo, and got it plated by a local chrome plater. The end you can't see clamps around the seat post.

Nick: Very nice indeed, but I have the Carradice support, meant to be QR, and I'd like to keep it that way since this is for only occasional use of my Carradice Junior. I'd like a 12 cm stand-off attached to the support, and held to seatpost with a velcro strap.

Thanks, Nick.

I wasn't clear; I wanted a system whereby the support with bag attached could be quickly removed from the bike, leaving bare seatpost and saddle.

My idea for this particular support was to have removed the "prongs" altogether and simply strap the support, by top rail this time, to the loops (with bag strapped to same rail but inside the outer too), attach that 12 cm-long stand off permanently to the bottom rail to keep the bottom of the support level, and use a third strap to attach the other end to the seatpost. Removal of the whole schmeear would thus involve unbuckling 3 straps.

"Was to have removed ..." I don't know what complex tense that is, but it well describes the situation, because yesterday I gave the support to my brother.

It really is a rather elegant saddlebag support solution for the right saddles -- with bag already strapped to the support, stick in the prongs and cinch the Fastek strap to the seatpost. And, for saddles not right, I think my hack would have worked well. But brother has saddles more apt for this device, and I'd just as soon let him bother with it. Besides, perhaps he'll feel generous and give me that brass Sturmey Archer top-tube-mount quadrant shifter.

For the record, and for the information of those who may have scant room for a saddlebag between saddle and tire or fender: This support would be just right. Even strapping the device by top rail -- the prongs are 2 rails down -- to VO loops would keep the support about 1" above my rear fender, and that in a distance that is very small indeed. Only the SQR system raises the saddlebag higher, and that is clunky by comparison.

This photo shows the scant space between saddle rails and top of fender. Even a Junior will drape the fender when strapped directly to saddle loops. The SQR system does work in this space, but I dislike the clunky seatpost clamp. I will go back to a huuuuge Ortlieb bikepacking-type of saddle bag which trades vertical dimension for huge rearward extension. That one holds a bushel.

That setup of mine is pretty quick release. Takes about 15 seconds to unhook the Voile straps and enlarge their loop so that the bag can be detached from the support, and slightly longer to hook them up when re-installing.

Here's another saddlebag setup I used on a different bike. The bag loop fittings on the Berthoud saddle are much too close together for the loops on the bag to pass through them. I zip tied a short piece of fibreglass tube to the saddle using large zip ties, and the Voile straps on the bag loop around the tube. It's quick and easy to remove or re-attach the bag, and when it's not mounted. there's just the short length of fibreglass tube in place.
