Over the years, these dull.  I always thought they pitted and the lack of clarity was too much for me.  I'd toss them and buy more.  At $30 a pop, it was a bit much, but I like the low profile of the mirror.

I went to Riv's web site to get another, saw this, tried the baking soda with water suggestion and now the mirror reflects as good as new!

From Riv's site:  " After a couple years the mirror might dull a bit, but can be brought back to life by scrubbing it with baking soda and water, or toothpaste."

PS If anyone knows the size of this housing screw or has an extra one, I'd like to know the size or buy the screw.

Baking soda and water does the trick on mirrors! My German mirror is the best I've used and I feel safer riding with it. I'm not sure of the size or sourcing of that little brass screw but maybe see if the folks at Rivendell can help you out.

Ditto, on the baking soda

I tried last nite & worked like a miracle.

Regular car wax did not to the trick.

Yours sincerely,

Funny story... I had a German mirror and it was all scratched. Then I lost one of the mounting bolts. So I bought a new German mirror, had it on the bike a year, then had a small crash on some acorns.  The only thing broken was the mirror housing. It turns out I had kept the broken mirror and was able to assemble everything into a new working mirror.  So, the moral of the story is NEVER THROW ANYTHING OUT. Kidding. Kind of.

Roberta, if you have a nearby hardware store, Ace or similar in scale, not the big box HD variety, they should have the same screw or a capable substitute.

Hi Roberta,

That screw should be an M4 x 0.7 mm pitch thread. I think ~16mm in length should be adequate. Is the nut on the other side still in place?

Doh! Just noticed that yours is a slotted screw in the photo, which reminded me that I swapped out the original screw on mine to one with a 3mm socket head. I don't remember if I had to replace the nut at the same time, so probably best to disregard my previous post and just bring the whole thing to the hardware store.
