Hi friends, I'm looking for a rack that's suitable for my size 50 platypus, which will be here on Tuesday! I'm especially interested in the Rivendell nitto rack that's currently out of stock, but I'm open to others. TIA!

What model are you wanting?  Front or rear?

In case Sofiya doesn’t see this for a bit, I think she wants the Nitto Basket Rack for the front end of her new Platypus. We were chatting the IG DMs, so I’m in the know! Someone please sell her one 😁

(Oops I think I just replied to Leah so trying this again...lol). Doug thank you for inquiring, and Leah, thank you for looking out for me! This is the rack that I'm coveting (sold out everywhere):

But I'm open to considering other racks that can support a Wald basket. Right now I have the ocean air cycles erlen bag support for my zeitgeist bag.

I didnt realize those racks were so expensive. For another 10$ you could get a pass and stow rack that I think is a better design and made by a nice guy in CA.

Has anyone seen a Pelago rack in the wild? They come in three widths made from stainless or aluminum.  The medium size seems like a good compromise between a full-sized pass-and-stow and a small bag-support type rack.   In Europe they have lowrider mounts for them, even.

I just removed a Pelago commuter rack from a bike I sold (1990 Stumpjumper). It was a handsome, sturdy rack with a lot of mounting options. Unfortunately it was designated for use on my beater bike, and didn’t work with the canti brake cable and straight bladed fork on the new replacement beater bike. I got a “Verve” brand front rack for that bike. Seems a lot like the VO “constructeur” rack.

Northwest Bicycles sells several versions and sized of of the Pelago Commuter racks.  In silver and black. Aluminum and stainless steal.

DRW - thank you for the recommendation - those are beautiful, indeed. Contemplating.

On the Pelago - also checking out that option, thank you for recommending it! I should have also mentioned that I want to be able to support a Wald 137...

Mike, thank you for sharing the Velo Orange - it's very handsome. Also contemplating...! I may message you a few questions if you don't mind...

The Pelago can easily support that basket. I’ve also owned that VO rack and my opinion is the Pelago is thicker and less refined in appearance, although not crudely made. It has more options for mounting “feet”. The VO is a pretty rack, I ran mine without the rail.

Does anyone know the approximate weight differences between the racks mentioned? I'm personally not a big fan of huge racks flopping around at the front of my bike, me-thinks this would be good information for the OP.

Hi -

Sorry. I don't have a basket rack to sell. But I have bought two, and have used them for two years now. I recommend the Nitto basket rack sold by Riv very highly. The addition of the Captain Hook basket net (and potentially a basket as well) makes the rack much more useful.

I will admit to paying the pre-inflationary price of $250 each - which seemed high even then.

Namaste,

Corwin

I've been looking at the Simworks Obento rack, also made by Nitto. Theoretically available in silver or black but rare right now.
Here's a picture of one with Wald basket:
    (He has them in black)
More svelte and about $100 less than the RBW rack (which I have on my Appaloosa and it is pretty big).
For silver, ...you'll have to wait for them to make more....

I had thought the Pelago Rasket would be a nice rack/basket to try. It's more or less what I make for myself using a Wald basket, rack struts and some aluminum bar stock.

There was a nice review of the Rasket on the Radivist not too long ago...

Thank you to everyone who weighed in and helped me! I ended up going with the sim works obento. Haven't installed it yet but will be happy to report back when I do and have had some experience with it :-)
