I was re-installing a front rack last night, and despite my best attempt at being careful, I still managed to chip the paint on both of the mounting points. Very annoying. Anyone have a good tip for avoiding this? I'm going to remove the rack and touch it up to protect the now unpainted surfaces from the elements.

I’ve had chips from bikes falling over while working on them, or dropping tools, but not from installing racks. If this is a problem that keeps happening to you, I would suggest using masking tape around your mounting points, getting everything lined up and bolts started, and then removing the masking tape before tightening the bolts fully. Maybe a couple of layers of tape. I work painting cars and the body men usually tape off adjacent panels before installing freshly painted parts just in case they slip (the part and/or the person).

Thanks Mike. It was an mini campee rack and I've found i have to lightly stretch the posts (?) a bit to fit on the fork. Maybe this is just more of a venting post haha. I was really being careful, but now I'm just irked.
