I have some old Tektro V's from the box that I put on my Clem since they were laying around.
I can not install my Nitto Front rack because the arms aren't tall enough to clear the fork crown mount. ..see pic.
So I took the rack off, but I think it's a less expensive project for me to replace the front brake then find another rack solution.
I know Riv is working on a V brake but that could be awhile...
Who makes the tallest arm V brakes (Not Paul please) I want to keep this pretty budgety.
Should I look at newer Tektro's, Shimano's, anything else?
See pics
Thanks so much

I don’t know of any taller V brakes. This is a well known problem with that style rack. I recommend Shimano CX cantis for this situation.

This should help in choosing V's for your rack issue:

cheers,
Andrew in Sydney...who can actually sometimes find pages he bookmarked!

Sell that Nitto rack, get a Mark’s rack, and use the beautiful fork-crown rack mount point that it is visible in your top photo! That’s what it’s for. Like this:

What everybody else said because I've been there, v-brakes with that rack are a right bugger. Not gonna happen.

I've got V-brakes on my Atlantis with that rack.  I just measured the arms & they look to be 100 mm from post to where the wire connects.  They are Shimano, generic V-brakes.  All they say on them is "Shimano", other letters or ID.  I think they were around $30 each.  Pretty common stuff.

On mine, the wire passes under the rack stud.  It's a "just makes it" situation but it's been on there for years with no problems.  The chart that Andrew had link to is a gold mine of info.  Before I went on my Great V-Brake Search, I never new how many options there are.  Measure your V-brake arms.  I'll bet they're 110 mm.

Definitely look at the model number of your current v brakes and figure out the arm length. Then use gravelbike.com's table to buy a brake that work.

I have fooled around with this same problem quite a bit. It looks like you just need a few mm longer.

Tektro had some "long arm" V brakes that were designed for use with fenders. I think they are Tektro 857AL.  I saw them at my LBS and should have bought them. I quick search found they were discontinued.
Maybe Ebay search will fins something.

I bought some rebranded Tektro 857AL (120mm arms) recently - sold under the CON-TEK brand from Hollandbikeshop.com. They were intended for Beach Cruisers.

I’ve had the same issues. I managed to get my Paul motolites to go under the rack arm, but they still “clicked” when one side inevitably ran into it. Minimotos solved the issue for me, but obviously not a cheap solution. If you’d like to buy some Purple Paul cantis, now, I probably know a guy! :)

Funny that the topic of V-brakes has come up just now. Braking has been the Achilles' heel of my Hunq. I've tried Paul Neo-Retros and Touring cantis (currently equipped) and even after extensive fiddling informed by Sheldon's articles they still don't work to my satisfaction, especially under load and in the wet, which basically describes my commute half the year. I've been nervous to pull the trigger on linear pull brakes because of concerns that they'll clear the fenders, but after talking to both Paul and Grant I ordered up some Motolites and Love Levers that are scheduled to arrive today. So that's my SARS-CoV-19 quarantine project for the weekend. One way or another I'm going to have some surplus Paul stuff to sell soon.

When I had Grant on the phone recently I asked him about the Riv V-brake project, and he indicated that it's still quite far out. But while looking at the IRD website I did come across this link, https://www.interlocracing.com/shop/page/6, which has a placeholder for "IRD Rivendell V-brake" - although at the listed price I think I'll pass...

FYI
the old Tektro arms that are on there now (not sure of the model number) are 110mm from center of bolt to brake wire.

I had a similar question when I ran a rack like that on my Hunq. I ended up using some new XT v-brakes I got from Riv and they worked great. I ran the cable under the rack though. It fit perfect and I had room for 29x2.35 tires with fenders.

I've got some VERY long 135mm arm cheapy Sunlite v-brakes on order at my LBS.  Assuming they were used for their fat tire cruisers.

Wanted the option for uber clearance with 2.8's on my Susie build....

I had the 32F rack mounted on my sam hillborne successfully with deore V brakes, but I am guessing this only worked because of the smaller tire clearance which equated to shorter distance between fork crown and brake stud.

Hi -

From the photo - looks to me as though you have lots of room between the rack mount and the tire. I would be tempted to get v-brakes with shorter arms. ...Unless you will be mounting fenders of course.

Jay - Thanks very much for that table on v-brake arm length. The v-brakes on my Hubbuhubbuh are rubbing the rack. Not affecting braking much - but definitely sub-optimal. Looks as though there are lots of Tektro 857AL on EBay. The arms are apparently 7mm longer.

Namaste,

Corwin
