The first ride was interesting, I had to stop a few times to make tweaks.  So this will be the last time I use this mechanic.  First he wasn’t sure how to wrap the bars, ok, I can do that, and probably better as I may move the levers a bit.  The brake pads were rubbing and I had him loosen the fit a bit, ok, that can happen.  About 1/2 mile from home I stopped to check something and the rear break sounded like an elephant, that has worked itself out pretty much but the front still is loud.  The bars, they were not tightened enough and that almost caused a problem with that first stop.  The pics won’t reflect where the bars are set now but higher than in the outside pic of the bike alone, I was wondering why my hands were hurting.

The ride is very different than the Bleriot, a bit more sure footed, not twitchy at all.  Feels slower but he bike is different and the tires are 48’s vs. 42’s.  The bike fit is very good, longer stem than the Bleriot, longer TT, I am actually surprised that it did not feel much longer.  I could hold the bars at the ends which is too upright for me on the Bleriot.

It felt like I was working harder, my legs told me that but I think part of that was the many tweaks I had to stop and do.

I won’t ride for one or more days as I will be getting a Coolief treatment on my left knee tomorrow morning, like Radio Frequency Ablation but a bit cooler process.  I do not want another TKR.

So tonight I may wrap the bars now that I know the squeaky brakes will work themselves out and I will not be changing them, and the stem length seems good, and  put a rear rack on.

More to come I am sure.

I don't doubt it feels quite a bit slower!  But I bet it will ride so much better with a load than the Bleriot.  I'm amazed just how much slower my Clem is vs. my Hillborne. It's a huge difference, well beyond tires, and honestly it's kind of surprising. I imagine the Atlantis is closer to the Clem than the Hillborne. Certainly made to achieve different goals though.  That build is gorgeous looking and looks like a great all-rounder as long as you're not in too much of a hurry.

That's a good looking bike, Joel! I love the way the Atlantis color pops in the sun.

Joel:

Great looking bike & I know you'll enjoy it.  I too have an Atlantis & it's my 95% of riding.  BTW, what is that saddlebag?  I'm looking for something that's small & tidy like that, just for spare, tools, lock, just the small stuff.  Do you know how many liters it is?

Thanks Jason.  I’m not in a hurry but I do like to go for rides where it is not casual, if you know what I mean.  I just did a ton of measurements.  I was spoiled as my old bike guy had all my numbers written down and my tweaking was always minimal.  I gave this guy, a nice guy, mu seat height, how high I like the bars over the saddle, He even measured where the brake lever were placed on the albatross on the Bleriot.  All were off.  Now it really is my fault, I should have checked before I rode, so now I have the saddle and bar height correct and only minor tweaking will be needed.

I was really surprised by how much the bar sloped vs the Bleriot, but in a few rides I should have it nailed down.

The steering is slower, or less sensitive, what I wanted, so that pleases me.

I believe in a few more rides I will have it dialed in.

Thanks Joe.  Three color is much nicer in person than on the Riv site (just my opinion).

Doug, thanks.  The bag is what was called the Kevin bag years ago.  I sold a new one some years back on the forum.  I think the Sackville small bag is basically the same.  I don’t know how many liters but it is smaller than the Acorn small bag.

The measurements are a bit different but close.  Mine is 7W x 4.5 D X 4 1/4 H
That is without stuffing, you can push it a bit.

Joel,  it's a great looking machine!

It looks like one of you're tweaks was moving the ends of the bar up from the downward tilt.

What bar tape will you use?

I'm still tweaking my Sam.

I expect those tires absorb up the bumps very well.

Did you go with Standard,  Endurance  or Extralight?

I too really like that rear bag.

Are you going to add a build list to the thread?

Congrats and enjoy!

Thanks Joel.  I love Acorn's stuff & have one of their early rando bags.  Great construction.  But their smallest saddlebag was a bit larger than I wanted, so the Sackville may be just the way to go.  The measurements help a lot.  I'll dig into it.

I'm so glad your first Atlantis ride was a positive one for you and the bike, but not for your now ex-mechanic.  The very first Riv I tried was an Atlantis and it was such an "OMG" experience.  It is an awesome bike and and I hope you get lots of miles from it and your new knee.  Love it with the saddle color and matching XS saddle sack.

My Joe A. rides similar to your Atlantis.  I did test a Sam and as I recall, it rode different enough to notice.   I would say that the Joe A and the one time I rode the Atlantis felt more like Leah's Clem H and Clem L than it did to the Sam.  I know you're looking for a second bike, and I have the feeling the Sam will fit what you're looking for and will make a nice compliment to your Atlantis.

Paul,

Thanks.....

Good idea on the build list.  I will add one.

I have some Newbaums in taupe.  Then amber shellac.

The bars were straighter and when I stopped and heard the brakes squeaking (glad they are working the noise out) I must have put some extra weight on them. I thought I raised them, must have slipped again but they won’t slip now.

The tires are the standard, I can’t imagine what the extra lights would be like.  They are very nice, absorb some rough spots on my way to some quiet roads.

The bad is great.  I sold my banana bags when I got a couple of these.  Wish I had the banana bag, I really need room for a camera but I am going to try for the Acorn bag.  I may buy a small and medium if I get lucky and sell one on list, but I have to get lucky.

Joel

I should have done a build list so here it is, and a dark picture after some tweaks.

Sugino Triple, sold to me at an outrageously low price by a list member.

CX 50 Shimano cantilever brakes, given to me by a list member.

Hubs:  Rear NOS Suntour Superbe Pro rear paired for now with a 13-28 6 speed FW (almost new)
Front NOS Suntour XC Comp
Rims: Velocity Atlas, built by Peter White

Derailluers: NOS Suntour X1 front, NOS Suntour XCE longcage rear

Tires are the Rene Here 48mm with a funny name, I think Switchback..........

Suntour bar end shifters that were my last pair.

Suntour Expert (I think), Brake Levers

Albatross CroMo bars, no Aluminum around when I was buying parts.

MKS Sylvan Touring pedals

Nitto 9cm stem, 2 bolt seat post.

Bar tape yet to be done Newbaums Taupe, then some amber shellac

Suntour Skewers, another list member find.

My old nitto rack won’t fit but I have plans for it.

Brooks B17, and yes these new ones are much thinner. Since I am a lightweight it should be fine and comfortable already.

No plan for fenders but a rack is on my mind, I have to find out what will work.

I think that is it...  oh, a bell as always.

Thanks Roberta.  The Atlantis is very nice, different for me as I missed when Riv started with the longer chainstays.  I wanted an Appaloosa but the standover is slightly more and I went with fit, same with Homer vs. Sam, the Sam May be a tad better fit, it may be similar   to my Bleriot but fit better but I am not sure I want to part with the Bleriot and 2 bikes is enough for me.

My knee is now 2 years but it has been slow to heal up, still have stiffness but riding has given me my thighs and calves back, that made my wife happy.  I know that riding has made the knee better, talked to the doc about it yesterday on the 2 year visit.  Everyone heals differently and I will do about anything to avoid getting the left one done, not any fun for me.

Thanks for your feedback,

Joel

Hi Joel,
Nice Atlantis build.
By the way, did you get the 650b or 26" version of your 50 Atlantis?
I could not guess based on the pictures :-)

Congrats, Joel! Sounds like you're getting it dialed in. I agree with your observations on the wheelbase difference being nearly unnoticeable. I ride a Quickbeam and a Gus that are on yet more extreme polar ends of the Riv spectrum and 1) I only notice the difference on technical trails, with extreme climbing or rock dancing where I have to account for the greater difference in the turn arcs of Gus; and 2) riding 20 miles frequently, 1/3rd each paved, dirt road, and technical single track, my time of arrival is within a minute of each other time and time again. When I track the times by surface, the QB wins the roads, Gus wins the single track, and they equally counter each other.

With abandon,
Patrick
