In which I achieve escape velocity despite my bludgeoned brain to escape the noise of construction for the local festival, discover having a TBI headache in a tent in a hailstorm with zero count lightening is less fun than it sounds, and along the way I get to ride Beorn of Clan Gus Boots Willsen up, down, over through rocks, roots, mountains, streams all familier yet remarkable because Beorn can ride lines no bike I've ever had can. What a delight!

Beautiful photos as usual.

What is it about the GBW that makes it so nimble over obstacles? What does it have that the QB and Hunqapillar don't have? Is it the wheels and tires? Longer stays? Something else?

Still 'round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.

Patrick, you name the two most obvious: plus tires and longer chain stays. There are other geometry differences that are beyond my comprehension, including a shallower head tube. However, Beorn is nimble and spry like a bear is nimble and spry, which is to say not neither of those, but a more apt description is sturdy, hearty, lithe, stable, sure footed, capable of just rolling over things. The Hunqapillar is a vastly different riding experience on technical trails from the QB, and GBW is twice that difference again from the Hunqapillar. The differences between the three are much less noticeable on roads than trails, and become more noticeable as the rough and technical increases. I hope that helps. For sand alone, you'll be amazed the difference.

Patrick,
Thanks for sharing another adventure! The photographs are beautiful! They should be included in a GBW brochure. Hope you have recovered and are planning your next excursion.

This one is extra spectacular. What’s the elevation gain on a ride like this?

Drw, I live at 7,800 feet and topped out at a bit over 11,000 feet, so only 3,200 feet gain. No idea what the total gain is, but tends to be actual gain x 1.5-3. Don't track that. Total route is only 50 miles or so, round trip.

Thanks, Erl. The odd/ironic thing is that I've had another mini-miracle healing that allows me to ride and recover on day's I couldn't have in the past ... both my recent bikepacking trips began on days I normally wouldn't have day ridden more than a few miles. But that also means I'm more vulnerable to brain overload when I'm out as I have no brain cushion ... if that makes any sense. So all this is a very good sign .. me being able to even try these despite the various brain hits from the local construction.

Patrick

Ah, Patrick!
Stunning photos, once again. Thank you for your efforts to take them and share them. You obviously did lots of back and forth setting up the tripod/camera/timer and then riding past. You've certainly nailed your technique at that!
I hope your headache recovery was swift.
Cheers from winter in Oz, such that it is!
Andrew

Thanks, Andrew! I love that you use past tense with the recovery. Grin. These beasties are three to ten days. Over the years, one of the mini-miracle healings has been increased capacity to ride during that. Until this summer I just did day rides then, but have been testing the waters to see how I recover "out there." The answer is complicated, but a resounding, only if everything goes right as there ain't no cushion for anything that doesn't. Grin.

The photos are a joy, and are my sole memory of the trips after three days. Happy to share them, delighted you enjoy them!

Fabulous photos again. Your self shot results make my brain ache.

I'm always impressed by the body's never-ending efforts to compensate for a functional limitation. Your observations of riding in a state you'd previously not attempt or do s in a cursory way are right on. Sometimes gentle and of small increments to stay the course as my father in his last years or in an unleashing of resource not previously accounted when things become not what you expected.

Amazing what you can do with a bike.

Stupendous photos Patrick!

If someone from the Colorado Tourism Bureau,  if there is such a thing , sees the photos they might start paying you to take them.

Postcard worthy indeed!

Lovely post Patrick in which you use elegant prose to bring us along on your journey and find the perfect vantage points to set up your camera and reveal the beauty that is Colorado.

Cheers.
