It’s the newest trend around RivWorld - Platypus owners lifting their new Platys on high.

If you have a Platypus, former Rivendell mixte model or a custom Rivendell mixte, we need you here. Hoist your mixte on high, snap a photo and post it here. It will be delightful to see how you’ve set up your bike and all the personal touches you’ve added.Ā

I will play this game (except the hoisting part)!

2019Apr04-Rivendell_Wilbury.jpg

Rivendell Wilbury, repainted in "Cheviot orange", outfitted as an errand/grocery/takeout bike with front/rear racks, dynamo lighting, fenders, and two-legged kickstand. I have a small selection of panniers that I use with this bike (not shown), and it recently acquired a cardboard box on the front rack to better carry takeout.

This is essentially a 1X bike, as rear shifting is by a thumbshifter on the handlebar, and front shifting is via a downtube shifter (because I seldom need that low gear). I have no clue how heavy it is, but the addition of the mission-critical heavy lock (to complement the Pitlocks and security bolts) couldn't have helped. The eagle-eyed will spy the dynamo wire guides on the right fork blade, and the second brake cable stop on the top tube; this bike was originally designed for centerpull brakes, so it only had one brake cable stop. I threw these opportunistic mods in as part of the repaint.

It does ride and handle well, and even though not ideal due to its upright riding position, I've even taken it up Old La Honda and Kings Mountain, and descended 84E (local climbs in the SF South Bay), just for kicks. As an errand/grocery/takeout bike, this bike probably has the highest number of rides amongst my bikes.

This was my first #platypose on it's happy new bike day ride.Ā  My first Riv and first Riv ride ever.Ā  Super fun.Ā  I still have lots to do to trick it out but I can't stop riding it.Ā  I already replaced the cheapo plastic dyno light bracket in the front.Ā  We'll see what happens next.Ā  I also need to find a clothing color that will accentuate the Mermaid green blue which is out of this world.
Kate from New Jersey with her super fun all rounder that is blowing her mind!!!

Kate - you get to post as many #Platyposes as you want, and keep them coming. You are a fabulous pair. I’m so glad your bike is as great as you hoped. ā€œI can’t stop riding itā€ is exactly my sentiment. Best bike in the line!

Also, Kate coined our term #PlatyPosing. šŸ‘šŸ¼

Jason- Ā I’m glad you are right in the thick of bike dorking Ā with me, you good Canadian, you! If a Canadian calls you a dork, you can be assured he will concoct a way to say it to you nicely. I love looking at your pair of Rivs on IG.Ā

I have this picture up elsewhere but thought it was fitting to also put it up here!Ā

Leah, I love how you match the color of the frame! I can't recall what you'd called the color (I want to say raspberry....). Such a sweet match!

I had to give another jaw drop compliment towards that orange Willbury. I will own an orange Rivendell someday (mark my
Ā words) and that one is just so dreamy! An orange mixte?! Out of this world amazing!

Also Kate from New Jersey, I really like the comfortable/utility style of your Platypus! Congratulations on your first Riv/Riv ride ever! My Platypus is also my first Riv (although not the first I've ridden, we test rode bikes at Rivendell HQ in 2019 and I rode a Cheviot). There really is something special about the Platypus, the color, the fact that it is a mixte, the way it glides and provides such a carefree and fun riding experience... what's not to love? Enjoy yours and the adventures you take it on!Ā

Looking forward to seeing more great mixtes! Wishing you all fun, breeze filled rides!

I've had my Platy since Memorial Day weekend, making minor adjustments to saddle and handlebar.Ā  I might lower the handlebar a bit, but I know I LOVE the mixte--mine and everyone else who's posted.Ā  My Platy's handlebar is Billie Bar, drive train is 1x11 Garbaruk, tires are tubelessĀ  Gravel King SS+ (I think) in 43mm. Ā  I have multi-color spoke nipples, valves and caps, but I didn't get a chance to clean them for this pic. Ā  Its interesting to see each rider's personality in his/her build.

Kate, thanks for coming up with such a cool name--#PlatyPosing!Ā  Benz--I can see the family resemblance Wilbury to Platy.Ā  Row-n--TWO Riv mixtes!Ā  Aren't you lucky.Ā  I didn't realize the wheelbase of the Chev is so long! Ā  And, Ariel, such style and personality!Ā  Leah, you got me into this-- thank you!!!!

Joyce, HOW could we call your Corgi a Beagle? The shame!

When I bought my first Rivendell, I needed it to be a sort of minivan - fun for the whole family. I had little boys I needed to pull in a bike trailer, and then I had this Eskimo dog who wanted to ride up front.Ā

I got the heavy-duty Nitto rack and the biggest Wald basket money could buy and laid an old car mat in the bottom. That dog loved his basket and even learned how to lean in the turns.

The bike trailer was retired after a couple of years but the basket stayed put with that dog in it from 2012-2019, when he finally died.

Good photos.

Leah, this one with the dog held in place by a cargo net particularly caught my eye, because it reminds me of carrying 2 energetic (not to say neurotic) Shi Tzu in a milk crate bolted to a tandem rear carrier. I had lashed the dogs in place with shortened leashers, but the female, the neurotic one, panicked when we exceeded 8 mph and took a dive over the side, causing the bike and 4 occupants to go down. This almost crushed the female, dangling by neck, between crate and asphalt, but I managed to save her. A cargo net would have worked better.

More #PlatyPosing today. I decided to add a variation and do a squat while lifting my Platypus. Upper and lower body work.

Actually, I tried a few different variations with little success. Lift with one hand and get hit in the face when your bars swivel. Turn your feet for a side pose and pull something in your back. Try it with a bicep curl and find that the sloping top tube provides no ergonomics.Ā

You will get there, Joyce! And then when that happens let’s start a #ClemClutching thread and hold our Clems aloft!!! You will inspire us all, #RivSister.

Fitness and biking. I decided Grant is right about needing more than just biking to be fit. When Apple Fitness+ dropped in Dec 2020, I subscribed and have faithfully done the weight-lifting and core workouts at home. I have rarely missed a day of Apple Fitness, and I never, ever miss a day of outdoor exercise (biking, running, walking). After incorporating weights, I really do see a huge difference. I had strong legs before, but weights made them stronger AND I built noticeable strength in my upper body.Ā

This photo was from before I got Apple Fitness, and I was HURTING lifting that fully racked 52 Clem aloft! I should try it again now…

About to (for last 3 months) make mudflaps for 2 of my own bikes. Leah, what are yours?

"…they’re not that heavy."

How heavy are they? Ā Will somebody (or everybody) who owns a Platypus please take it to your LBS, get it weighed, and post the number?
My wife, who rides a 35 pound aluminum KTM Sorrento touring bike and wants a Platypus, would really like to know.
What does a typical Riv build with a couple of racks weigh?

I know I sound like a broken record, but so far we only have data from someone who deliberately tried to build a light weight Platy.

Not that it shows in the photo, but I DID wear a green and gold shirt for the occasion.Ā

Aeroperf - is this your way of saying ā€œpretty please with sugar on top will you weigh that bike?ā€ If you add ā€œwith sprinkles and glitterā€, I will stand on a scale holding that bike and do the math. And I hate math.

Jason: We got our green bikes!!!!Ā

Patrick: Those mud flaps are not just ANY mud flaps; those are Pamela Murray mud flaps. Our very own Pam rescues leather from the trash and makes them. She sent these to Analog to be installed on my bike.Ā

It’s a shame that my roads are covered in a layer of packed snow and ice. This bike is begging to be taken to the grocery store! I am not exactly hard core; I will probably try this in March. But we’ll see.

Didn't you move to a place that has snow? For grocery getting by pedal power on snowy or icy streets, let me wholeheartedly (and I'm serious here) recommend at British Racing Tricycle. I owned one for 18-24 months before I sold it because I needed the money. I live in the SW high desert where snow that stays rarely sticks around, but I did considerable shopping on it when dry, and during that week or 2 in ~2010 that snow and ice stayed on the ground, I discovered how liberating a third wheel. With a Baggins Hoss on the back, it was the ideal grocery getter*, and with 3 wheels, when I saw ice or snow, I sped up**. If I lived where there was snow on the streets for more than 1 month per year, I'd buy another one.***

In the photo it has a tiny Camper Longflap, but I did use it with a Hoss, much bigger. Even better: get a custom-made rack / basket for the rear end. Downside: it tends to roll away from you when loading the rear unless you set the "parking brake" by cinching a brake lever. Two front brakes: cantis pulled by left, right pulled a ~1960s Alternburger dual pivot. Both on front wheel. Bottle dynamo with IQ something headlight.

* I used to wheel it through the aisles of the nearby groceries, as I do my bikes and, nice features: didn't fall over while loading; never had to worry about flipping down the stand or leaning it against a fragile row of merchandise; weight didn't affect handling.

** You can also stop dead at stoplights or on hills without unclipping.

*** I'd also convert from single wheel drive to a 2-wheel Trykit drive. This was 1-wheel drive and British, so that riding on the left, pedaling torque would push you up against the crown of the road and away from the kerb. In US of A, right side riding, the left drive wheel tended to push you down the camber into the curb. But I only noticed this while standing and honking hard up hills, and leaning to the left fixed it. Or perhaps our roads are flatter than in rainier climates.

Demanding passenger, seated in the basket, adds five or so pounds (it would be rude to ask the exact amount) to our total weight.Ā

She is pleased with this Platy's 'Olive' tones. We'd have to change her name to Persimmon or Pomegranate before considering those nice custom colors.Ā

A typical weekly ride has about a thousand feet of climbing. Even with her there, the bike rides wonderfully 'light and breezy', I hardly notice she's there, until she looks back at me and whines about our uphill pace.Ā

Weather has been clear and cool following some welcome rains last month.Ā

Yay Leah,
I love the new Platy and of course the #PlatyPosing we have been waiting for.Ā  The colors shine.Ā  I'm not that hard core either.Ā  I purchased a wool hat with flaps from RandiJoĀ  but haven't ventured into the cold windy air to ride yet.Ā  Catch me around March and I'll be there.Ā  Til then, I am working out indoors and walking daily outside.Ā  Keeping up my upper body strength for spring posing.Ā  I just received my front bag from Rons.comĀ  and a back bag from Swift.Ā  I'll see if I can get a weight on my bike for anyone interested. I've ridden for 30 years and never weighed my bikes.Ā  I never thought it mattered.Ā  I also didn't know better.Ā  Maybe ignorance is bliss.Ā  I rode a hybrid bike with generic tires across Iowa and thought it was the most fun thing ever.Ā  Someone on the ride commented on my big tires at the time and I shook my head and probably said something dumb.Ā  I am seriously the 'just ride' person out there who gets on a bike and rides.Ā Ā
But now I'm curious.Ā  Since I do lift weights.Ā  My husband lifted the bike and put in on the Yakima racks on top of his car.Ā  He did it with ease.Ā  I have a hitch rack on the back of my Subaru that makes it a bit easier to get a bike on.Ā Ā
Stay tuned.

Not that shocking. Ā Those sound like reasonable numbers for reasonably equipped bikes.
We’ve been conditioned by the racing crowd to think that lighter weight is somehow ā€œgoodā€, and we should pay gobs of $$$ for it.
What really counts is whether you enjoy the ride.

To be fair to Joe - which I am also always willing to do - he did say no one should remove the accessories.

Someone in another thread posted a 29.x pound Platy, but stated that they had gone for a light weight build.
So I was trying to encourage posts with all the goodies for a typical weight.

I could hardly be more excited to finally, after probably 3 or 4 years, be an official Riv ownerĀ not simply reader. In November/December I had really wanted a Gus. I missed it, and bought a Surly Karate Monkey in it's place. The chainstays are short, but it wheelies well and is fun to ride with jones bars. In March and April, I really wanted an Atlantis. I was too slow to decide to buy Bill Lindsey's, and hadn't convinced my wife in time to reserve one of the new batch....But, in the end, with some help from everyone here and especially Clark Fitzgerald's great report on his 1yr with Atlantis then switch to the Platy, Leah Petersenn "sold" another one. I convinced myself the Atlantis would've overlapped with my existing bikes too much anyways...

Serendipitously,Ā  after reaching out for Riv Riders on the Front Range in Colorado, Lance from Littleton offered to let me ride, and sell me his 60cm Mermaid Platy. We had a great ride this past Sunday before I brought it home to push all my neighbors to take a spin on it too, and since then I have ridden it at least for 1 minute of every hour I think (jumping out of my work-from-home-station to the garage to take a spin!).Ā

I love the all-black aesthetics a la Crust build with black Antelope Hill extralights or Rylands from his June 2 post. I will update one day with new, bigger tires, and also racks, followed by changing out the cranks for gearing that will let me tackle group rides a little easier, inspired of course by Leah, just to shake things up a little bit! In the meantime, I am over the moon (or at least mountains) with my first ever Riv!

Just Ride (Mixtes),Ā

Christian,Ā

Well, this takes the cake for me. Oh, swoon. I love the pics. Love the story. Love the angst to have a Riv just building and building in this compelling account. And then you went ahead and got the very best and most beautiful Rivendell that RBW makes!Ā

Also, the PlatyPosing. You understood the assignment.Ā

If you take that thing on group rides I’ll just tip over with joy. Two Racing Platypuses? I feel faint. Carry on! Ride the wheels off of it and let us know how it’s going. I rode my raspberry Platy 34.4 miles with a Sam Hillborne rider today and it was bliss, start to finish. I rode it 28 miles in a club ride last night, and same story. Pam Murray once said that there are no junk miles on a Riv; they are all golden miles. I wish you millions of them.

Welcome to the Platy club! You’ll love it here.
