I had been saving my original Nutcase red and white polka dot helmet. I bought it a million years ago in 2012 when I got my Betty Foy. I thought it was one of the cutest helmets I had ever seen. I rarely wore it.

But this year I set an ambitious cycling goal (made it in early Oct. and then upped it to 3,000 by Dec 17) and I started wearing a helmet. No reason in particular, but I just figured with that much more time being spent on my Clementine, and with the long descent on my route, well why not. I have a blue and white polka dot Nutcase for my RBW blue Clementine, and I was saving my red helmet for my future red bike. But my cranberry Platypus is instead a lovely raspberry Platypus, and now I think my helmet is too red for it. WHY helmet matching has become important to me, I don’t know. But it is, and I want everything about this dream bike to be just SO, which led me to shop the Nutcase website and see what was new there. As luck would have it, they dropped a new line of helmets called the Vio on October 14th and with the tag line, “Can you see me now?” They are lighted helmets!

There are several colors offered, and the “Cabernet” looks like a raspberry to me. I ordered one (free returns) and will see if this is worth the $149 price tag. The vent system has been redesigned as well, which was desperately needed. This could be a pretty perfect helmet. They are offering 10% off today, 10.24.2020, so look for that in your cart.

I can’t post the link here, so I will do it in a reply...one moment, please...

Does anyone else on the List helmet match? Or am I starting a new trend?

These Vio helmets are either super cool or really dorky, but as Lone Wolf Leah, I’d probably wear one regardless. JP objects to the Vio; he thinks my polka dot helmets are my signature look, and he may be right. My teenager thinks the Vio looks modern and great. As I said, there’s a return policy.

Also, yesterday my motorcycle helmet finally arrived. JP chose it for me...how is it he thinks the Vio is too much???

I love that helmet! The lights are great, especially since you ride at night so much...Joe approved!

I'm kind of an anti-helmet matcher, I use matte black which goes with everything. But I'm crazy about the gray/red on my custom and am tempted to become a helmet matcher for it.

But does it plug in to your dyno hub? You're a convert, yes? That said, I've really noticed some helmets recently with lit yield triangles in back. Like, Really noticed. Very smart.
But if it isn't dyno powered, it's a no go, I'm too lazy to charge much of anything.

And +1 on Joe's preference for black. And vents, many more vents.

Kai, ha! I AM a convert to dyno. As to this Vio helmet, I doubt it plugs into the hub - I do know it uses a USB charger. If it does plug into a hub, I don’t know that mine allows it. I have a Shutter Precision, if that means anything to anyone.

I’m admittedly NOT excited about charging my helmet, I agree with you there. But it *is* raspberry and vented..don’t tell me you aren’t tempted! 🤣

Wait, we're plugging helmets into bikes now?? I'm not sure having yourself tethered to it in a get off is a good idea!

I cast a dissenting vote on the black helmet thing. I wear a helmet on occasion. Mine got stolen out of my driveway last week. If I don't go for the silver one that BBDD modeled above, I will replace it with a similar Lazer model to the one I had--in the Flash Yellow color. Especially because I don't wear garishly colored lycra clothing, when I do wear something bike-specific, it makes sense to wear something that motorists can see from afar--an ounce of prevention, blah blah. Red seems like it would be pretty visible as well. A trend I see these days is the all-matte black look--black carbon bike, black helmet, black jersey and shorts or tights. Looks pretty bad-ass, and blends in perfectly with the road! Also, of course, black is hot  in another way during the warm months of the year.

I don't think dyno-driven helmet lights will become a thing. What would be cool if they could design something that could convert the energy of your head movements throughout the ride--kinda like a self-winding wrist watch. Or build in a little solar panel and collect the energy during your day rides..Or make a "head stand" like for a wig and it could also be the charger.

They stole your helmet??? Wow. Report back here if you get the Nutcase Vio!

I’ve never, until seeing the Vio helmet, thought about helmets for visibility. I wore my fun polka dot ones hoping to be interpreted as whimsical and fun so maybe folks would be less inclined to run me over. It feels like there’s a natural angst between the Lycra riders and cars...I was hoping to be seen as something less provoking.

But I can’t deny that more is more when it comes to lights for night riding, and I’d be happy to have a lighted helmet. I’d have to find a way to put the charger near my helmet, though, or it will be forever dead.

My trick for recharging stuff is to have it all in the same spot as my phone charger. When I used to ride at night more I got in the habit of pulling my lights off the bike right after coming home and plugging them and the phone in at the same time, same spot. I'm already slightly manic about keeping my phone full so it's an easy habit to get into..next day, everything's charged!

“ What would be cool if they could design something that could convert the energy of your head movements throughout the ride--kinda like a self-winding wrist watch. ”

That WOULD be a great idea!

I'd consider this helmet because of the lights, MIPS, and vents!(Leah, you NEED those vents for the hot as hell days in LV. ) but I just bought a white MIPS helmet with vents, so I'll get this one if I loose that one. Or if it gets stolen! Mark, at least they didn't take a bike!

You, Leah, win the prize for style!

Confession/breaking news: helmet was not stolen, I hid it on myself! Luckily I had not yet pulled the trigger on a new purchase. Although I found some nice deals on yellow helmets.

The Vio was supremely ugly and I sent it back. Red and white polka dot vintage helmet it is.
