Matthew Williams’ recent post on his bullmoose bag project reminded me that there are lots of boutique artisans out there doing really cool custom work. It also got me thinking about what I’m looking for in an ideal commuter bag. I’m interested in a briefcase or courier bag that’s carried in a transverse orientation behind and under the saddle, like a Carradice. I’d want some sort of quick-release mechanism attaching it to the saddle, and it would be supported from underneath by a smallish rack. The idea here is something that wouldn’t be out of place in an office or on an airplane but that’s simple to attach and remove.

First off, can anybody point me in the direction of an existing product that meets these criteria? (Ortlieb has some options that come close, but are designed to be carried pannier-style, not saddlebag-style.) If I end up going with a custom bag, what are the commercially available quick-release systems that I could incorporate into the design, or maybe retrofit onto an existing bag? I’m familiar with Klickfix and the Carradice Bagman. Any others that I should be aware of?

Check the Carradice website. They’ve got at least 2 QR options.
