QB 62 FOR SALE

a little complicated but bear with me.  selling frame, fork, headset and maybe wheels, my silver series 62 quickbeam, low miles, no chips or dents, very good condition.

I bought it to build up with shimano's alfine 11 hub and a jtek shifter, for all around use. but I got five other rivs now, including a qbeam 68 that is more my ideal size, and I just don't use this bike.

to install the alfine I had a bike shop 'coldset' the rear triangle, i.e. expand it, from 120mm to 132mm (pretty sure those numbers make sense). so if you were to convert it back to single speed you might have to have it reset/coldset to 120. local mechanics tell me that's no problem and would not affect the frame adversely; or maybe one could use spacers? beyond my expertise.

so: asking $750 for frame, fork and headset, plus shipping from my local ibke shop in salisbury, md. I;d consider driving a couple hundred miles to meet a buyer.

I'd consider throwing in the original qbeam wheels/hubs for, say, a hundred bucks more if that's an inducement. the current front wheel is the original. also throw in the schwalbe marathon supreme tires, 40mm or thereabout, no charge.

SEPARATELY THE ALFINE:  if that has any appeal to this group, I'd sell hub, which is build into an excellent 32 hole Mavic rim (AZ19 if says on the rim sticker), plus jtek shifter for 350 bucks. it's silver, has maybe four years and 500 miles on it. I just changed the oil in the hub for the first time. rim brake.  so hub/wheel/shifter for 350.

how's it ride?  the alfine's gear range, for me, would cover anything but fully loaded touring in hills...it's a little short on the 'easy' end there, though maybe not true for a younger, stronger tourer. I've heard of these hubs leaking oil, but that has not been the case for mine. the jtek shifter is way more compact than the original trigger shifter that came with the alfine, and it works perfectly.

Not in the market since I have a 64, but FWIW, I did the same coldsetting of the rear of mine to 132ish (also for an Alfine.) I ended up not liking the Alfine and put the frame back to regular QB use with a single-cog rear hub. I just put a 130 threaded Phil FW hub back there, and all is fine.

So the differently spaced QB is fine, and I kinda feel like it’s more versatile.

FWIW, and to make everyone's life easier: you can easily find fixed/ss hubs to fit a 130 or 135 mm OL rear triangle, so a buyer need not reset the frame to use it ss. My 2003 Riv converted conversion Road uses a Surly fixed/free hub spaced 130 mm, my 1999 Riv gofast uses a 126 mm OL Phil fixed/fixed, and I've owned 1 White Industries ENO eccentric fixed/free hub spaced 135 mm OL.

Patrick Moore, who would buy a (~58 cm) Quickbeam if he didn't have 3 other fixed gears, in ABQ, NM.

Plus one on the "don't worry about the spacing" idea. 

It's dead easy to roll an old 130 road hub into singlespeed use. XT or Ultegra 9sp is probably cheaper overall to turn into a one or two speed Quickbeam wheel than finding a "track" wheel these days. I got a nice Paul wheelset singe-sided fixed wheel for mine, and actually had to replace the 130 axle with a 120. 

Is there a word for the grail bike that stays a grail bike when you have the grail bike? "Quickbeam" maybe?

What is the recommended range for PBH on this model? I ride a 58 Appaloosa and a 61 Roadini. Would love to add a SS to the fleet.

adam, re recommended range for qbeam 62, I can only tell you that I’m on the outer edge of its range, at 6-5 with a pbh of 97 plus…that said, it’s a decent ride for me, with seat and drop bars extended close to maximum. but the qbeam I’m NOT selling is my 68, which seems ideal to me.

I have a friend who has ridden my 62 all day on a few occasions. he’s about six feet tall, says it fit him quite well (seat and bars lowered of course).

my daughter, five ten, has ridden it and we can get the seat right, but she’s a bit stretched out on the drop bars. probably it would fit her fine with more swept back bars.
