Flarm and transponder recs and questions.

Hello.

I was wondering if you guys can recommend a good good flarm and transponder. I am leaning towards fusion for the flarm but the transponder got me all sorts of confused. They are going into a non experimental glider. I was advised to get the the trig, but which one? Air Avionics offers a really neat electronic altimeter that can also control various transponders (except TT-23 at present time) and radios. 

The altimeter is accurate within 3-4' when I had it calibrated with my TT-22. The baro altimeters on many gliders are way off. 

My PAPRs are good with a TN72 and small gps antenna as long as I'm not thermaling, but regulations say no.

The Trig transponders are popular units.  As George and Ian mentioned, if you want to save space and have a compatible radio you could use the Air Avionics ACD-57 to control the transponder and radio with one head unit.  You can also incorporate an altimeter into the display.  They do require additional licenses (ie fees) to enable control of the radio, transponder, and altimeter options.  If you lack a compatible radio, and have a sufficient budget, you could install the Air Avionics radio, Trig transponder and GPS antenna, FLARM fusion, and control the radio and transponder from the ACD-57.  You could also add the altimeter function.  If the ACD-57 currently lacks the ability to control the latest Trig transponder (TT-23), contact Air Avionics to see if they plan on supporting it.  It works with the TT-22, the previous model.

Let's not forget that you want a flight computer that displays Flarm, xpdrs and ADS-B traffic. 

Check out www.fly-air3.com. They're targeted to hang and para glider pilots, but work fine in gliders and have a bigger display than the Oudie N. I put mine on a NavPad. 

They also have optional Flarm functionality, but just one internal antenna.

Eric,

I found the same in the beginning. 

After pushing twisting and pushing a bunch of times,

my fingers seem to get it right.

My tech savvy son says I tend to be afraid to make changes because bad things happen.

Alternatively he loves to make changes because there is so much new to discover.

Anyway.  It gets better after getting time on the knobs.

I love it now!!

The Say Again function is fun.  I want to experiment with  the headset to the mic,  press the SAGN button and read back clearances in the voice of the sender.

My suggestions;

FLARM 

==========

The Fusion PowerFLARM will work fine but is a little bulky.  There is also the LXNav PowerMouse which is smaller.  

They both come with all the antennas (GPS and Flarm), and power cabling, that you will need.  

You will need to buy the appropriate cable to send data to a ADS-B and FLARM traffic display.

Configuration and registration of your FLARM can be a level of confusion.  See https://aviation.derosaweb.net/presentations/#flarm for some details.

Transponder

==========

The Trig TT-22 is the current gold standard.  Unsure why the TT-23 isn't suggested in this thread. 

It comes with separate base unit and a control head.  You will need to buy or make the cable that goes between them.

You will need a transponder antenna and coax cabling.  

Yes, you must have a GPS antenna.  As you mention that your ship is NOT experimental you will need three items;

TN70 GPS receiver, TA70 GPS antenna, and cabling between the two plus to your TT22.

Contact one of the glider specific avionics sellers and they will guide you on your way.
