Not quite what it seems.  Details of the "essential" plan:

Check-in messages/Reactions Unlimited - but manually, and without location?

Text messages/Weather requests 50 total

Photo and voice messages  10 total

Live tracking/Location requests $0.10 ea (10 min+ interval)  <<<<

Activation fee   $40

And, you can no longer suspend and re-activate.  Thus for a year that's $180 (12 x $15).  (Or $130 if you cancel after 6 months but pay the activation fee each year.)   Plus the live tracking fee, e.g., if you fly 100 hours at 10-minute intervals it is 600 tracking points thus another $60.  Overall, a worse deal than it used to be.  The next plan up does not charge per tracking point, but the monthly fee is $30.

If you have an old subscription you can select “Enabled” plan which is a bit more cost effective.

$7.99 per month + $0.10 per message or track point so if you just use your InReach as an emergency messenger, it is not so bad. If you use it to chat or track at short intervals, the higher plans may be better for you.
