The radio slides into a cage where it mates with a connector on the back. The maybe 22 Ga. wires for power mike, PTT and speaker are mostly soldered in, but shock and/or untutored repair efforts with solder gun have disrupted the connections.

It looks like 8 wires go into a 14 contact connector. No headset or intercom in use.

We need a new connector. Any ideas on where to get one will be much appreciated.

May take some looking, but stuff like that I try:
Digikey
Newark Electroonics

Another that escapes me.

Obviously try Dittel, but it should be a generic part.

I believe the connector on the rear of the radio is
generically called "Centronics".  Google image search
helped.

These connectors is available with various numbers of
pins.  As you say, you need 14 pins.  It's unclear if you
need a replacement connector for the radio or
for the cage.  I assume the cage.

This is probably the item you need.

Best of luck.

George - This is a 14-pin Centronics-style connector without a lock (tray does locking).
Inside the tray, you need one of the following connectors (solder-pot or IDC insulation-displacement):

Buy a new connector from DigiKey, or if you're interested
I have a complete unused tray with an IDC-style connector (PM me)...
Hope that helps!

Dave,

Thanks.  I was guessing about the "cage" as I couldn't find a picture of it - only the rear of the radio.  But I was general aware of what these kind of mounts are like having see the similar in GA airplanes (and a few gliders).  PS - I hate them.  I figured with a little amount of judicious Dremel-ing would convert the Centronics connector I showed to use with the Dittel cage.

Better yet find a used newer Dittel on eBay and skip the cage altogether.  https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=dittel+fsg.  I fly with my beloved Dittel FSG-71M on which there is an easy/fast to use 10-position frequency mechanical switch (versus the "how the hell can I get to my saved channels while flying" soft keys).  That being said having just those retro push buttons on the 720 is easier still - if you can remember frequencies beyond 123.3, 123.5 and 122.8!!  I can't.

Thanks again.

I believe the connector you are looking for is a 14 pin centronics style D sub.  I don't have the radio in front of me but that may help your search.  It does look like it goes into a small PCBA on the back of the tray.   You may need to verify the PCB footprint of the connector you find has tails that will fit the board.  Also, be sure to get one with locks that are compatible with the aircraft side connector.  Digikey or Mouser will be good places to look.

You may want to check Amphenol 57-10140 for the tray side connector.

Dave and a fellow Canadian both pointed me to the connector https://tinyurl.com/ATR72-tray-Centronics on DigiKey. There's only 929 left in stock now.

Thank you for identifying the part.
