Hello.
I was wondering if you guys could point me to some resources that deal with sales, contracts and registration of a used glider. Neither myself nor the seller have any experience with this. Should we do escrow, as the company also does the paperwork? The glider is at Warner Springs. We are both California residents, but I also have an address in Oregon where I would ideally like to register it. There is also a question about the trailer. What is the process of transferring that. Thank you.

I bought a pre-owned glider 3 years ago.
The FAA handles registration. They need a bill of sale and the FAA has a bill of sale form on their website as well as who to send it to.
Don't forget sales tax of the state that you live in (home of record). Florida wants their money, but they make it difficult to find who to sent it to. Don't ask me how I know. Be assured that as soon as you get your FAA registration, they will find you.
Trailers are a whole different routine. Every state has their own rules. My state of Florida will not title a trailer under certain criteria (weight or value). I had to register my Cobra trailer as homemade.
Other states may require registration with a VIN, however Oklahoma does not. Just contact the Dept of Motor Vehicles in your state for their requirements.

Sales tax is not applicable to pre-owned gliders in CA.

from California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, the definition of "aircraft:"

Regulation 1610 (a) 3.   ...any contrivance designed for powered navigation in the air, except a rocket or a missile. "Aircraft" includes an airframe or a fuselage even without an engine.

Not offering legal or tax advice, but I believe pure gliders were never designed for powered navigation in the air.

Also, https://cdtfa.ca.gov/lawguides/vol2/suta/105-0000-all.html#105-0100:

"
Although gliders are designed for navigation in the air, they are not aircraft within the meaning of section 6274 because they are not powered contrivances."

Previously owned gliders are exempt.

More than once, I challenged the CA State Board of Equalization on a glider sales tax bill. Every time, the bill was dismissed.

Use this language:

I am claiming an exemption from consumer sales tax under Regulation 1610 (A) (3).  Nxxxx does not meet the definition of an aircraft.  Nxxxx is a glider exempt from sales tax.
