Lucky me! 🧑‍🎄 put an Oudie N under the 🌲.  I am weighing the option of using my phone as a hotspot or adding cell service. I don't want to pull the SIM from my phone, I have already lost micro SD cards in the 27 and H-301.

US pilots, what cell service do you use in your Oudie N? If you don't mind sharing the cost, that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance for your information.

Not to hijack this thread, but the photo shows FLARM antennas right by the canopy plexiglass.  I have heard say that that should not be done, but I don't understand why that might be a problem.  Sure beats putting those antennas down lower in the cockpit if it's made of carbon fiber.  That said, the thingies that hold the FLARM antennas up in the photo are hopefully made of non-conductive materials.

Back to the Oudie N, is the current software finally capable of displaying FLARM traffic on its map?

Yes it has been able to show FLARM traffic for a while. It must be connected to a FLARM source of course. We connect ours via Bluetooth to our S100 which is getting flarm data from a powerflarm. Works pretty well

In addition to other considerations.  Maintain an airgap between the exterior skin and the antennas to prevent a static discharge from burning out your PFlarm.

I cable my Oudie N IGC to my iPhone X with a lightning to USB-C cable. Then I use the phone as the hotspot for the Oudie. The Oudie also keeps the iPhone charged.

It appears you tywrapped the antenna to the mount. I believe this is frowned upon. Also have as long a horizontal run of cable from the antenna before bending the cable (a few inches is fine). This is based on my reading, this season, on installing Flarm antennas and cables as related to the 24e I fly.
Excess cable I did as 3" diameter coils as well as 1.5" bend radius as a minimum for routing.

I use T-Mobile. For one season, I took the SIM card from my phone and put it in the Oudie N. For the next season, I used my phone as a hot spot. I experienced no difference in Oudie N performance between the two. To my surprise, both connected to cell towers while I was flying out of Moriarty. We have some areas with sparse coverage, away from the two interstates crossing NM. I had continuous coverage up to 18kft, and in any direction from Moriarty. So I basically pay my monthly $25 service fee. I haven't run into a throttling issue.

As a side note, I do know other Oudie N users here found connection issues with other carriers (I don't know which ones), but there are solutions.

Thanks for the replies new neighbor Mark P and local guru Eric.  ;)  My Mark uses Straight Talk (Tracfone) but the SIM was bought a year ago before Straight Talk was bought by Verizon. Mark worked for weeks go find a SIM that worked a year ago but it appears I was unnecessarily worried. I tried my Verizon SIM (I have a google Pixel 7) and it works. I immediately received an email notification from Verizon to confirm the device swap to ensure it is set up properly on the network to maintain coverage. Received a second email when I replaced it in my phone. So perhaps swapping isn't a good idea, I may need to call Verizon since there is now a flag in my account when I log in asking me to verify the new device.

As for the FLARM antenna install - FLARM range analyzer results are good. People can see me, I can see others. There are not a lot of options in a carbon fiber fuselage. The 'thingies' are acrylic sheet, and nylon zip-ties should not be a problem on antennas. There are zipties with metal, and that wouldn't be good. Further discussion should be a new thread - and for the carbon fiber gliders I would be interested in your install location and FLARM range analyzer results.

I've swapped my SIM 10-15 times between an iPhone 6, iPhone 6+, Galaxy S8 and S5. Everything works, and the while Verizon does a "tut tut' or two, there weren't any problems. The Galaxy 8 ran Personal Navigator well while using the SIM, and just as well using the hotspot on the iPhone 6+. I prefer to use the hotspot, because it's easier to make phone calls or whatever when the phone has the SIM.

Same question for UK Oudie N users - what sim card have you used and how much data does it need?
