I'm curious to know where RAS_Prime members are from.  Rather than all chiming in, I wonder if the moderator could give us an idea of where people are located, and how many of us there are.
Cheers

There are currently 569 members in this Google Group.  Is this the largest glider/soaring discussion group in the world??

As to location of our Members - Other than email address, we don't know anything else about members unless they happen to mention something when they sign up.   Based on those infrequent comments the vast majority of members SEEM to be US based with a small number in Europe and a very few from other places around the globe. Sorry we can't be more helpful.

Finally, we don't like to think of ourselves as "moderators" - preferring "administrators" instead.  Moderated groups implies messages being held until each is reviewed and only then released or deleted. That being said we do review those messages that Google has thoughtfully placed into Ras_Prime's "Pending" area hoping to find some reason for this action on Google's part.  After careful study over 2 years of review of these pending messages we still have zero idea what causes them to be sidelined in the first place.  AI falling on its face?  Luckily, it doesn't happen very often.

Thanks,
Ras_Prime Administration

Segelfliegen, the larger of the German gliding Facebook groups has 16700 members.

I don't know if you are simply unaware of the actions of your other moderators but this group appears to be very strictly moderated from the messages I have actually had declined.

I'm very disappointed to hear some of Matthew's posts have been declined. Please install filtering that automatically approves everything he posts here. He is one of the Good Guys, always with useful and interesting remarks.

About pending comments to conversations.

Recently we approved another three (3) pending comments which were part of the thread "FES Conversion of pure gliders".  Why these were flagged by Google is unknown. Is "FES" a bad word in some language?  Might it be due to the mechanism of replying to a conversation (i.e. via email, web site, browser type, mobile phone, etc)?   We honestly cannot remember any posts that were purposely rejected within the past year+.  We wonder if these incorrect might be a mobile phone fat finger of the wrong icon as there a very small space between the icons for approve (check mark) or reject (X mark) - see the attached image.

We researched a way within Google Groups to look back in time and see which comments were rejected so that we could look for some commonality.  No luck - once rejected they are gone.  So we are now capturing the content of pending comments to see if there is any commonality.  Our suggestion is that if you find that your comment didn't make it through then submit the comment again.  No harm in doing that.

As to "filtering" and auto-approving comments from specific users there is no way to do that.

PS - Segelfliegen with 16,700 members?  Very impressive indeed.

On the groups I manage, there are three settings available for each user: Not allowed, Allowed, and Moderated. I'm assuming setting someone to "Allowed" will let them to post without any "filtering".

Eric,

Correct that there are the three choices you mentioned.  Note that every member of RAS_Prime is set to "Allowed".

Any "filtering" (conversations set as "pending") is being done by Google which does seem like moderation.  Luckily, there have been only 1-2 pending conversations each week and as soon as we see them we OK them.

We actively watch pending conversations to determine if there are some specific words that trips Google's trigger (oops, maybe trigger is the wrong word to use!).

Unfortunately, per our research, there is nothing that we can do about what Google is deciding.  If you find out something different please let us know.

Regards, RAS_Prime Administration

I haven't paid enough attention the "pending" situation to be certain, but it mostly seems to be members of the group that use a different email than the one they used to join the group. I can approve the message, and one choice is "always accept postings from this email". Their messages then go through whether they use the original "sign up" email, or the one they accidentally used. So, it's not filtering on content, but just on an incorrect email address.

I don't recall any pending messages from non-members, but I'll pay more attention in the future.

Fair point! Only in America  could we turn a niche social media group into a potential world championship. 😅  We're sometimes deficient in self-awareness but never in enthusiasm!

During 2024 and earlier there were a number of legitimate conversations that were flagged as "pending" for no known reasons.  None of them should have been blocked as the content was fine.  We would look daily for these occurrences and approve them as soon as possible.  This could delay the conversation for potentially hours which is irritating.

However for the past approximately 2 months there have been no conversations marked pending.  Unsure how long this has been going on as we don't keep track of non-events.

Seems odd but we're not complaining.

Thanks,
