I have talked to this guy in Northern Virginia before. Sorry, I can't remember his name. I lived in Laurel, Maryland at the time and we were only about 20 miles apart. So we compared our receive signals at times since we were both using the same signal source, an analog Canadian TV station several hundred miles to the north of us. We would often see the same events at the same time but he would consistently see more events than I did because of his higher gain antenna. He is using a multi-element yagi pointed north. I was using a long wire HF dipole through an antenna tuner. Since my antenna was basically omni-directional I would sometimes see some events that he didn't see which leads me to believe that I was seeing those events as backscatter and because his antenna was pointed north he couldn't see them.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Just to provide some further information. The kit is not actually mine but
I am in touch with the owner. The RF Receiver
<https://www.livemeteors.com/photos> is located in Northern Virginia
(Washington, D.C. Metro area), this is the setup
<https://www.livemeteors.com/how-does-this-work>. Its tuned to 55.24 MHz.

In case you missed it, the recorded video of the live stream is now
available here for further study:

Hello Gary !

It has been a long time since hearing from you, although I recall you have been very busy and may have moved to another location by now I seem to recall.

Our last conversation and notes exchange was related to the subject of 'meteor smoke' as I recall :)

I believe you are correct when comparing meteor return signatures from closely placed receiving observation locations. Likely it would have been more similar in the results obtained if both receive sites had similarly equipped receiving antennas.

After the Derecho occurred last August in Iowa, you may recall almost all of my antennas were damaged or completely destroyed, including the high gain Yagi used at the time for meteor return monitoring. To date, the 54 MHz Yagi has not been replaced as other interests such as the solar flares recently increasing in number have made it another interesting alternative subject to pursue.

Good to hear from you again !

Denny

Jason,

I lived there about three years ago and I used an analog Candian TV station which is north and west of Niagara Falls. There is someone there in the area who also uses that same source. It has proven to be reliable. Attached is one of my captures from that source. My location was mid way between Baltimore and Washington D.C. Located now in southwest Idaho. Not currently set up with permanent receivers.

Regards,
Gary

HI, Are there any members of this group that observe meteors using radio
forward scatter techniques in Washington DC / Baltimore area. I am shipping
equipment from the UK to build a Radio Observatory here and looking for
some advice on what transmitters I can use?

Gary,

Very nice fireball image. Thanks!  What software did you use?
