VOA Loss

Hello Group -

I would like to know who among us thinks its a good thing that Trump has closed down the VOA?

This is a huge mistake that VOA has gone QRT. Putin, Xe, and others must be happy beyond belief. Our President has done them a great favor.

People do not realize that in other parts of the world people still listen to HF Radio Broadcasts. The loss of VOA is a major major mistake.

You have done it again Trump. Whats next?

More shortwave stations being shut down this week. Voice of America, Radio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia, along with TV and radio broadcasts from FL to Cuba, are being shut down per Presidential order.

None of these were directed to US domestic listeners. Less and less to listen to on shortwave. If you listen, as I have since age 10, the internet and end of the Cold War have decreased SW by a huge amount.

I do recommend an App called SWList which you can tailor to your location and time which lists station and freq for english language stations you might hear in your area. Very nice app.

Thanks for the link. Ironically Trump wants to defund PBS and NPR as well as VOA.

They mention that the VOA is not intended for the domestic audience. In 1986, while on a vacation trip to North Carolina, I contacted the VOA and they invited me for a tour of their Greenville NC station. On the way there I was involved in a traffic accident and spent 18 days in the hospital.

I remember seeing stars and I was medivacked to the hospital on a helicopter. Apparently the accident made the local news and I had visitors such as the helicopter crew and some members of the Voice of America staff.
The staff gave me some literature which they distributed overseas and was not available in this country. I still have that literature somewhere.

They will be missed.

The original mission of the US Agency for Global Media and its Voice of America  was to spread the ideals of Western democracy and American customs, traditions, culture, history, music, and language lessons. They did this for decades regardless of jamming attempts from the USSR and other totalitarian dictatorships.

But under the leadership of a particular US Democrat president, the agency was filled with left-wing lunatics who, in some cases, denounced American ideals and instead sided with the regimes who were adversaries of the US. During the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, VOA refused to mention "terrorist" and instead referred to them as "insurgents." VOA spread the anti-Israel propaganda coming out of Gaza. The  VOA celebrated LGBTQ issues and denounced nations who were not onboard with these sexual perversions. The VOA renounced the US as a racist nation. It denounced capitalism and endorsed 'Democratic Socialism.' Its new missions were completely opposite from those of its founding. Thanks goodness its budget of a quarter billion dollars US is being cancelled. 

We have a $36 trillion dollar debt that needs to be paid down or else we risk a horrible financial disaster. (That's 36 followed by 12 zeros. 36 trillion seconds is over one million years.)

Yes, we all wish for the glory days of shortwave broadcasting, an era when those living in closed societies had to hide their radios for fear of being branded as traitors and imprisoned. It was an era when our overseas military members' only source of news and entertainment were the VOA, RFE and BBC.

Sadly, with social media, shortwave broadcasting has probably outlived its usefulness.

I am sure you are a great guy but

I am not sure if you are concerned about the budget or are angered by the perception that media is biased against your

own deep seated beliefs.  

If you are concerned with the budget, you might also want to eliminate the Trump Era Tax Cut which is about to be extended costing 4.5 Trillion in loss of revenue which no way will help the debt.  If you are very well off, you could benefit.     Unfortunately Eliminating Medicaid will help the debt but you might

not like kicking 30 percent of nursing home residents out especially if you or a family member has to care for them.  The debt isn't simplistic.  We need to all work together to resolve the situation.  Reasonable heads should be able to prevail, but only

if they work together.

 If you are concerned about "left wing lunatics denouncing American ideals" you might want to

look at the following media bias report in which A total of 618 people across the political spectrum took the survey. Each survey participant was asked to self-report their personal political bias – 45 participants with a self-reported Left bias; 158 with a Lean Left bias; 184 with a Center bias; 178 with a Lean Right bias, and 53 with a Right bias took the survey.  VOA came out very close to "Center".

This is getting off topic, but I want to remark that getting rid of the "Affordable Care Act" will end Federal payments to States, but it doesn't mean that Medicaid which is exclusively a State program is going to end. 

With the ending of the Department of Education and the "Affordable Care Act", there will no longer be a need for federal taxes to fund these programs, meaning that federal taxes should decrease.   Also the process of collecting money for the Department of Education and their associated block grants BACK to the states, created a bureaucracy which can now be eliminated resulting in further reduction in the need for federal taxes, which will lower the tax burden on the citizens.

What needs to happen now is that the various States have to increase taxation to fund education and Medicaid. 

This is all according to the social principles of subsidiarity which state that the most local political division that can take care of the need should. 

This will eliminate the Federal government running our schools and healthcare for the needy.

But at the same time it raises the responsibility of local government to provide and manage these needs.

I'm personally concerned that this message isn't being mentioned in the newspapers and since I've written several emails on this exact subject, part of today's duties was to remind our State Legislators of this responsibility to us. 

The result will hopefully be more efficient and give citizens more say in getting these needed services to those who need them. 

It probably will result in more taxes because there is work to do both in education and in health care, but it will succeed in giving us local control where it belongs.

It's difficult when ending the VOA is because of funding. 

But please confine the discussion to just Voice of America, and it's shortwave services. 

My opinion is that just like they should have kept a trained radio officer on ships and continued to keep 500 kHz and the SOLAS system but kept adding to it, that we need to keep radio based systems including AM Medium Wave, Shortwave and VHF Broadcast as well as radio based communications with fire, police, and other vital service providers. 

We have fiber optic undersea cables but we should not eliminate radio backup - which we unfortunately have already done when we eliminated the radiotelephone services giving long range radiotelephone service using AT&T WOO, WOM and KMI https://www.radiomarine.org/historic-coast-stations/kmi-san-francisco 

I'll moderate the entire group if I have to but conversations about VOA, and related are certainly welcome but the political questions are in turmoil and I don't want that turmoil bubbling over in here. VOA has done a tremendous amount of good and I'd like to see it continue but it probably will due along with all other radio based communication.

Cheap shot.    I  actually was appointed to

President Bush's Small Business Economic Advisory Council, so I think

my perspective is rational, sane and conservative.   Perhaps I should have

 just let your political snipe go without comment.   However I did feel

it was unfounded and out of line.     

Sorry to disagree with you but fact checking folks do not have "Trump Derangement Syndrome".

  I provided you with a precisely balanced and factual survey  that showed that most

folks  feel VOA content was center, not leftist as you chose to represent it.   Thus the facts disagree

Without getting political, I continue to support

VOA and  shortwave radio too.  As others have pointed out,

vast areas of the world still remain without electricity and internet or can't afford it.   

Simple and Inexpensive shortwave radios still fill an important role in communication.  

VOA  has long provided reliable broadcasting around

the world that has generally been held in high esteem for factual information.

VOA and BBC were both welcome when sailing deep sea. I especially loved the Sunday Concert over the BBC World Service. It must have cost them a small fortune to air that over the entire BBC World Service transmitting system, but I in my little radio room used several ITT/Mackay Marine HF receivers usually tuned to WLO, WSC, and KFS and tuned them to several BBC World Service frequencies and filled the room with symphonic melody.

I toured the BBC Kranji Far East station a couple of years ago with the Singapore  ham radio club. It had closed down a few months earlier but most of the equipment was still there. A hall filled with eleven high power stations, among them 250 kW and 100 Kw transmitters as large as small trucks. The  big curtain antennas were still up. 

I really felt quite nostalgic for  earlier times when we listened to BBC and VOA at sea and on land for their balanced news coverage. They were pretty much  apolitical as far as anyone could tell. 

The BBC closed it down due to a lack of audience - most people in Asia are on the web and use mobile phones for news. China still has some very strong HF transmissions but they seem to be able to sustain the costs even though their audience must also be tiny now.

The end of an era.

Eric,

I mentioned BBC Sunday Symphony broadcast, nothing about propaganda. It was wonderful to hear classical music over shortwave in the middle of the ocean. 

AFRTS was much better news source than VOA, but as I said earlier, many Africans learned English by listening to VOA Good Morning Africa and VOA News in Special English.
