Whilst  tuning  on  MF   yesterday evening  I chanced upon
a strong  CW  signal  on  486 khz.  I was using  a multiturn
desktop   2 foot square home brew Loop.  The approximate
bearing from  Malin Head  was  90 degrees.

There was use of the  Q  code  QTC  several times   ie
QTC 817.   It was impossible to fully copy  the words
because  there was use of  Russian ?? code letters,  when
I  had grabbed a pen and started writing down  I got the
following  Kaliningrad  343 kara 24128 ugowostogna
stx baltjskogo mor ....korablej  112100 po  172100 okt rajone..
......  etc etc.
At the end of the transmission  it send  REO REO REO
de  RMP RMP RMP.
I  remained on the frequency and  it started up again, in the
same manner.
This evening  I again heard the transmission  on  486 khz.

Anyone got an idea  of who or from where,  though  I suspect
it is coming from  Russia ?

Kind regards

RMP is in Kaliningrad (an enclave of Russia formed after WWII) just
northwest of Poland on the Baltic Sea. REO is the COLLECTIVE CALLSIGN
for ships in the North Sea.

Nice to hear some 500 kHz signals!

Russia has still 3 coast radio stations trasmitting CW on MF and HF, they are:

KALININGRAD RADIO for Baltic and North sea,

SEVASTOPOL RADIO for Black sea and Est Mediterranean sea

VLADIVOSTOK RADIO for the Pacific.

They are Navy coast radio stations trasmitting WX and NW (NAWIP).

Thank you all for confirming the  location of  the station  I heard  on  486 khz  over
the last few  evenings.

Really nice to  copy  CW  on  an  MF  frequency,  there is still life in the system
despite  everything that  has happened  since  1999.

Kind regards

That's great to hear. I might have to resurrect my Skanti MF TRP-8250 again and put up the Marconi Tee and see what I can hear.
