I have a beautiful key that Phil made for me, it works very well.  It was a reproduction of the PS-213 key, but a true reproduction.  I also have the PS-213 from which he made the reproduction.  The original is slightly better in use, but the base that is on the PS-213 key that Phil made for me makes his reproduction much more enjoyable to use as I do not have to hold the key down with my other hand.

Pictures enclosed.  Restored original PS-213 work being done by G0NVT, Phil Boyle.  The key from which he restored the above key.

The beautiful reproduction Phil Boyle, G0NVT made for me with a base as I specified so the key would not tilt.  The maker's mark says "G0NVT Telegraph Keys, Penketh, England.  Instrument #00. (which indicates a pre serial #001 - namely a prototype!  Penketh is on the River Mersey, about 26 km(16 miles) west Manchester.  I met Phil in Hull, MA, USA in 2008 when he was visiting USA.  I also have one of his beautiful salami slicers, the Marconi key that was supplied with the 5 kW spark sets used on the Olympic class ships (Olympic, Titanic and Britannic).  This photo shows the original key and Phil's reproduction.  http://www.qsl.net/n1ea/Guillotine_Marconi.jpg

I also had Phil's reproduction of the PS-213 key, and also have the original PS-213.
I like the original key much better then the reproduction key, therefore sold it....

Avi,

Did you have the version like mine - he made a very few of those.  Or the one that has a has no terminal screws but uses a 1/8 inch phono plug for connection.  Phil calls it his Freelance PS-213 version.

It has a rather bulky spacing / tension adjustment in the rear that is one piece.

I like the original too.  It has a much better feel, but the non "Freelance" that Phil made is a close second to the original.

Here's two photos of the Freelance that Phil sells on eBay from time to time.  He has a basket weave spring in that heavy fixture at the rear of the key which adjusts the tension on the tongue contact and the spacing.  It is a very decent key but the original PS-213 would make Marconi cry it is so delicious.

Hello DR,

I had a Freelance PS-213 version, no terminal screws with a 1/8 inch phono plug for connection...

I bought this key before I could find the original Marconi key to buy, and worked SKCC guys for a while, but the day my Marconi key arrived, I knew the Freelance version will go....

I told Phil, about my intention to sell his key, and told him though his key is very nice and beautiful and perfectly made, but for me, having an experience working with a real Marconi PS-213 key in Haifa Radio 4XO  really makes the difference... and he agreed to it.

Do you think the feel of the original PS-213 key is better than the Freelance PS-213 made by Phil Boyle?

I believe the original is #1 - the best, Phil's reproduction of the PS-213 is #2, and Phil's Freelance is #3:  it just doesn't have the comfortable crispness of the original.
