Hi!

I have learned about QubesOS just and and would like to try it out. Unfortunatly i just have a Macbook Pro, 13 inch, 2017 at hand (my work notebook).

So I have tried to install QubeOS on an external SSD but it is not booting properly. I have managed to get to the second step in installation (building the VMs) but after that I am unable to boot into the system.

Are there any up to date guides for installation and running on a modern Macbook?

Do not leave this thread after your any steps (successful or not) because I want to buy Macbook 12-inch for Qubes OS in near future. And I will keep my eyes on this thread. Thank you in advance.

Hi!

part 1 of the installation is working without issues. The boot up of part 2 is only working with refind and pushing options /mapbs and /noexitboot through to XEN. But part 2 is crashing and rebooting creating the net-vm. I could finish part 2 with telling it to not create any VMs and was able to get the dom0 but i did not have any templates there.

Any information about disabling qubes-netvm are not aplicable to me and do not work.

If you are going to buy a new laptop for the purpose of running QubesOS or Linux I would strongly refrain from buying a Macbook due to the struggles. My Macbook is rather new so I will not be able to get a new one at my work notebook for the next few years. And even so, I just wanted to try if that OS could be my daily driver. At the moment I do not see how I can manage this apart from lending me a system.

Did you install any boot loader in your Mac OS? For example "Clover EFI bootloader" or something like that? Or you just clicked on Command + Alt and chose the external flash drive with Qubes OS for installation proccess?

Hi!

The installation or of USB stick is working out of the box with the option key

The parameters for xen will work with a bootloader in my case refind.

But as I said, I am stuck with a non working system, presumably because of the net-vm.

I have managed to install QubesOS with crashing on creating the net-vm. I have managed to get to the rescue system (boot from stick and starting anaconda --recue manual), but I was unable to disable the netvm from starting.

At the moment the systems boots up and presents me a black screen with mouse-cursor and restarts a short while after that.

I have a booted system now, but without working keyboard, trackpad (using external keyboard+mouse), wifi (crashing when attaching to sys-net). Perhaps Apple is doing some nasty things to lock up their Macbook.

Did you try the last Kernel version from Qubes testing repository?

No, I could try that I suppose, when I am getting some kind of network running.

Hi,

How it's going? Are you happy with Qubes on Macbook?

No, I have not tried further, as I did not have the time. Perhaps Apple is doing some nasty things to deny the installation of foreign OSs on their hardware. I wanted to try the new release, if there is a change, but not had the time for this. I think I can manage that on the weekend.

At the moment I can not recommend a Macbook (modern model) for QubesOS in any way.
