Still trying to figure out Qubes,

When i open movies with "videos application", i get:

AC-3 (ATSC A/52) decoder, MPEG-4 Video (advanced simple profile) decoder are required to play the file, but are not installed.

I also tried:

Banshee
Parole
Snappy

But there's just black background with them.

Your time is much appreciated.

This comes up so often it should be a FAQ.
The decoders you need don't ship with Fedora - they may be buggy, patent
encumbered and nasty, so Fedora doesn't include them.
But they are available from the RPM Fusion repository.

Look at the bottom of www.qubes-os.org/doc/software-update-vm
Enable that repo (if you must)
Then you'll be able to install the decoders you need - most likely from
gstreamer, you want gstreamer good, bad and ugly plugins to cover all
sorts of cases and ffmpeg and libav
I'd advise you to clone your existing fedora template and pollute the
clone with all this stuff, and then use that clone to back the qubes
where you want to play Videos.

There may be an alternate solution : play videos with debian8. It should
ship ffmpeg related players, right? Bernhard

Use VLC media player. and just make sure to change video output settings to x11.

Please don't top post.

You're right, switching to a Debian template is almost always the right
answer. :-)

The Debian templates dont ship with a player, but installing vlc will
pull in required libraries and decoders, and is good solution.

Repairing will have to install vlc in a template, (again I'd suggest
cloning) and then use THAT template for the qube where s/he wants to
watch Videos.

ah nice i was looking everywhere for the easy way to enable rpmfusion without having to download it. I remember you had mentioned it before on here but couldn't find the thread.

You might want to add to set the output mode in vlc to x11, otherwise it use too much cpu%.

Hey Andrew I seen you on an episode of the new screensavers, nice job promoting Qubes!

Are you sure that's required? I've never had a problem with it on the default settings.

ya my cpu% goes way down. somethign like 60% to in the 20s. Its a Qubes thing but setting that gives me the cpu% I would get on baremetal. I get worried about heat sometimes. I thought others have had slowdown issues too on the mailing list too but maybe its just me. I do have an older amd cpu on this machine. Not sure if I actually tested the diff on the i5.

Videocard might make a diff too. I have nvidia on this one. intel on the other. I'll test it tomorrow if I can.
