Ever since I installed Qubes R3.0, I have seen the update icon appear, yet when I select update, it says wait for updater to launch, and then it doesn't appear to do any updates.  The window that appears says "Last check for updates was more than a month ago", and when I then click "Check for new Updates" I get the error, "There is no network connection available.  cannot refresh cache when offline.".

I don't think the dom has updated since I installed the system.  The sys-net and sys-firewall both have connectivity.  Any ideas?

Hi,
In order to be sure let's wait for some people that are more expert than me.

Probably the reason is that there are no internet connection in dom0 which use sys-firewall as proxy for downloading updates.
Sys-firewall download and verify updates that are installed in dom0.

You can do this both using command-line on gui.
Using gui you can right click dom0 and "Update VM"

Best way to update dom0 is to type sudo qubes-dom0-update on a terminal in dom0.

I ran it from the command line and it says, "No new updates available", so I guess it's updated.  The confusion stems from the Apper program because it doesn't seem to show progress and in the end shows a page with a red shield and an X, with a message, "Last check for updates was more than a month ago".  This is extremely confusing and gives one the impression that updates are not running.

How can one verify that the updates have actually been installed on dom0?  Is there a command we can run to check it?

Try 'sudo yum history'.

To check specific entries in the resulting list, e.g., #3, try 'sudo
yum history info 3'.

Yes, details are described here:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/968

In short - it's hard to convince GUI package manager that repository is
actually available even if theoretically there is no network connection.

Since the GUI doesn't work as expected, could I respectfully recommend you eliminate the Apper all together.  It seems like it would be better to open a terminal running qubes-dom0-update, since users are used to this -- other VM updates are all done in a terminal window.

Thanks!

Yes, that would make sense.
