Hi,

I'm new to Qubes and yesterday i've installed qubes, everything went fine. When qubes was almost done it asked me for my disk password. So I thought that that would be the passphrase, i entered the passphrase but it was wrong. I litteraly tried evey possible answer. Is there a possibbilitie to delete qubes or something because i'm completely stuck. I can't do something else with my pc....
I hope someone could help, because this is just a new pc and this is already a big problem...

Yes,

When you have to input the decryption key, a lot, if not all of your
Operating system isn't loaded yet, so it didn't apply your custom
keyboard layout settings yet.

Disk encryption can't stop you from erasing the disk. I don't know how Windows is installed, but if you can get any installer to load and run, it should work fine. See what boot options your BIOS has.

I know I could solve it that way but the only thing on my pc I can do right now is to try the 'disk password'. I think there is no way that I can get into my bios from that only screen I can see.

Yes, by the time you see the Qubes "disk password" it is too late. Anything is possible, but it would be a strange BIOS that gave you no way to get into BIOS setup. The answer might be in the motherboard manual or whatever else came with your new computer. Or just randomly try pressing F2, F12, F9, Del, Esc, Tab right after power-on. Usually some of those do things.

I've done that before man, it can happen to anybody. Just reinstall qubes from the usb stick again and do the password over,
this time one that will work for both keyboard if possible. Or one you can remember how to type on both.

I also have a similar issue on raspberry pi where no matter what I do when I reboot ro plug in my kb it goes to uk layout and some keys are diff so in the passwords so I have to use one that works for both.

You haven't given any detail on how you installed Qubes, what options
you selected, or whether you had read the documentation.
Nor have you said if you've been able to translate your password into
input on qwerty key settings.

If you installed Qubes alongside the Windows, then you should be able to
boot to Qubes, edit the grub config and end up with a dual boot set-up.

If you simply replaced the Windows installation, then you will have to
reinstall it, if you insist on Windows.
If you took a backup, then you have no problem.
If your PC came with Windows preinstalled, then it is likely that there
is a rescue partition you can use to reinstall Windows - you can often
activate this by hitting a key combination during boot - check your
documentation.
If you deleted this or can no longer activate it, then you will have
to reinstall from some other media - you may be able to boot from DVD
or USB, but you will need a Windows install image: you may , or may not,
have one of these. If your PC was oem licensed, then almost certainly
not, so you will have to acquire one.

In general, you should be able to pre-empt the boot and get to your BIOS
by mashing keys as the computer boots. It varies, but often smashing DEL
repeatedly, or F11, as the PC starts up, may get you to some interrupt,
and with luck you should be able to select a boot medium.

I don't know what level of Linux knowledge you have, but you could try
booting from a liveUSB distro and inspecting the disk to see what
partitions you have there.

Give us more information on what you did, and what you know, and we may
be able to help.

As to the suggestion that Windows would be "safer" than Qubes, that's a
completely different discussion, best left to another time. Lets focus
on getting you working again.

How did you install Qubes the first time?

First of all I really want to say I appreciate you help. Here are some more details you asked for. I was not able to log in with the qwerty settings( the only letter that could be different was the 'z' that would be a 'w' on my keyboard). My linux knowledge is not so big, sorry for that. When I first installed Qubes i choose the basic 'Install Qubes' option and not 'Test & Media' stuff if i remeber that correctly. I filled in all the requider information and went further. Then it asked me to delete Windows,... to make more place free for Qubes. Then it started the installation. After a while the 'Disk password' came up and that's where i'm stuck right now. If I want windows back Ill guess i have to do it via a USB stick because i deleted Windows to create more space for Qubes?

I've first tried to get into my BIOS when my pc starts up. Pressed del, f10 and f11 at the beginning but I did not managed to get into my BIOS...

When my pc started up the first thing on my screen I see is the Grub boot menu with:
-Qubes, with Xen hypervisor
-Advanced options for Qubes(with Xen hypervisor)
I can also enter 'e' to edit and press 'c' for a command line.

I hope you can help me further.

On one of my desktops, the boot screen is so fast that I don't see it.
I have to just keep hammering away at the Del key to beat grub. You may
be in that position.

From what you've said, if you genuinely cant get the password right then
you have no alternative but to reinstall. You should think of what you
have as a blank disk.
Probably not what you want to hear.
I would definitely exhaust all the possibilities on the encryption
password before giving up though. (One possibility I have sometime seen
is that extra characters get inserted during the boot - if you press
LeftArrow you can get to text prompt, and you may see that some
characters have been filled at the prompt - backspace to delete these
and then try your qwerty version of your password.)

I assume that when you installed Qubes you were able to boot from USB,
which suggests that your GRUB is set up to boot from USB in priority to
HD. So I would try that. If that doesn't work then try booting with the
HD removed, and then hot plugging it back again.

Good luck

I think I can't get the passwors right... But what do you mean with that there would be no other alternative to reinstall? Can I do it from the disk password screen, could you explain me how to do that. Or is it just better to go a computer specialist and that he could solve the problem for me?

From what you've said you deletd Windows and installed Qubes encrypted.
You now cant decrypt the disk.
So you have no alternative but to reinstall something - whether Qubes or
Windows, or something else, becuase that disk may as well be blank.
If you cant get the password right there is no way round this.

A computer specialist wont do anything different. He wont be able to
"recover" Windows, and he wont be able to break the encryption.
I'd save your money.

Since you were able to install from a USB this sugegsts you will be able
to reinstall "something" from a USB drive.

It sounds like you are doing something wrong. I'm guessing that if it's a new PC that it probably has SSD (Solid State Drive) correct? If that is the case then it just boots up a bit faster than normal hard drives (as is relative to this case). Look up the BIOS or Boot Option keys for your PC online and then as soon as you turn it on press one of those repeatedly.

It is usually just a game of speed at that point.

you can call microsoft to get windows back.

Why is it not possible to boot the usb stick again. What did you do the first time that you can't do now? USB sticks just don't boot themselves by default usually, but if it did the first time it should still now.

In your bios options look for the boot order section, you also might have to enable booting from external disk option.

Qubes requires quite a bit of work and managing of Linux packages to get running as you would like it. I suggest using a second computer initially that you can use to get familiar with it.

I have the same issue with booting into BIOS with an SSD. It boots too fast and I miss the prompt half the time.

When you get to the Boot prompt (likely f9) select boot from USB. You'll have option as to where to boot from.

You need to have a bootable USB drive on the USB. You can find the directions online.

If you have any other issues just shoot me an email directly. I'll walk you through any issues. My email is in the list.

Have any of you ever had to call Microsoft Support? Good luck with that. In any case they're not in the business of assisting people in Windows Installation (without a paid support package.)

I use to have to call them every time I installed windows xp, would give them my name and address, and they gave me a key. and it was that fast. every single time. did that for years till I didn't need to call them anymore. Most people never try.

Nowadays I still contact them. why not? These are the days of live chat its so easy and they free. I'm banned from both of their forums, banned from their irc chatroom. But when they Want to take over my pc? sure go ahead... lol. THey use go to assist I believe. Its easy and helpful man. try it one day. They are not FOSS, they get paid money and are monitored and constantly evaluated. They even have to take abuse if you're into that.

I always do surveys too i'm like the prime candidate for a phishing attack hahaha.
