Double check the firewall settings for the AppVMs you're testing. They may be set to deny all network traffic.

Been a while since I did this, but I believe that if you create a new VM
and specify "ProxyVM" as the type instead of "AppVM" or "NetVM", you'll
wind up with a VM that has similar (or identical?) configuration as
sys-firewall.
