I get this message at boot. Should i update kernel or just ignore it? I haven't noticed any issues. Only issue I have had is I had firefox open in a untrusted domain, the vm froze and vm manager was telling me it refused to give back memory, so I killed it, then restarted it. I then had no network connection and noticed I wasn't connected to the network anymore and it was showing a new network. Intstead of "wired network" in network manager it had a connection enp0s0, so what I did was just clicked back on wired connection and deleted the enp0s0 connection to restore my network. Not sure if this is related to the boot error at all.

Hey felipe i just upgraded my qubes 3.0 to 3.1 and started to get the error again saw your post here when referring back to the thread. Sorry for not replying earlier.

I don't really think it is the issue that is stopping you from booting the qbues, it probably has something else to do with the 4.1 kernel and your specific hardware. Because that mcelog message is just a warning that mcelog is not working. It doesn't refer to any real hardware error. So far i haven't had any other issues, even sleep is working fine for me still in the new qubes and they seem to have fix the problem with network setting changing on wake.

So like the fedora thread says as long as you make sure your edac_mce_amd module is loaded, you can safely disable mcelog service which only work on intel systems.

List your full hardware specs, also have you tried to use a diff kernel, maybe downgrade it?

on another note I stopped using fedora on an old ancient duo core laptop because of an annoying scary "failed to find device cpu0" message on boot, which started with the 4.x kernels(also happens with arch), that i was promised would be fixed by 4.2 but never was. So the first day my cpu didn't boot, without even trying to figure out why i just removed fedora lxde and installed lubuntu wily iso instead and their 4.2 kernel doesn't have the issue.

I got the same message when I went to do the new 3.1 rc1 install.  It had no effect I can tell on the install process or the function of Qubes once installed.  That is, as far as I can tell there have been no issues.

Just an FYI, I did not get this message back when I installed 3.0 only 3.1 and using the same install device.  I mentioned it in the 3.1 rc1 announcement thread.

Cheers,

Tim

weird i got the message on the first alpha live usb, and then also after installing qubes to my hdd. Apparently disabling mcelog service doesn't make the message go away, i can't remember what I did to stop seeing it, maybe something in grub? I'll have double check that fedora thread and see if i missed a post.

I think maybe you should specify that you actually have an intel processor and the only thing on your board that is amd was the pcie graphics card. Also maybe not related, but did you make sure to shut off the integrated card in the bios when using the amd card?

You actually edited grub.cfg or did you do it thru default grub and then regen grub2 ?  I finally decided to get rid of this error message so I now tinkering to see. My first thought was /etc/default/grub editing the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX: adding mce=off  But looking over the solution ticket I think the issue is with boot logging. If so then maybe all that is needed instead is to add 'mce=nobootlog'to that line instead of mce=off Then regen grub2 config.  Does that sound right?

Some explanation here:
http://xen.markmail.org/thread/7m6qgkoss5jb3ocr

Until that would be resolved, mce=off should get rid of the message.

I do not have grub.conf in that directory.  Only a splash.xpm.gz  but thats it.   Which is why I asked about grub2 thru default grub.

So as I understand it you end up with a race condition and the answer is to set the init order to prevent this

" so we use following _initcalls
* 1. device_initcall(xen_late_init_mcelog);
* 2. device_initcall_sync(mcheck_init_device);
* 3. late_initcall(threshold_init_device);

* * when running under xen, the initcall order is 1,2,3;
* on baremetal, we skip 1 and we do only 2 and 3."

Is this something that will be patched and then updated in 3.1 testing repo?  I assume its fairly low priority as it debug log that does not effect functional performance.

hmm you are right, try to put it in the grub command line in /etc/default/grub and then update grub.

Not really. Apparently the error message is expected result of proper
initialization...

I have a patch for this, which just hide the message (it is in devel-4.2
branch of my qubes-linux-kernel repo). Will try to include it in
R3.1-rc2.

I actually can't get the message to stop either by putting mce=off in /default/grub or in grub.cfg. I dont' know what I'm doing wrong, in 3.0 I must of put it in the right place, and this time on 3.1 i must not be. I just wanna shut it off, anyone able to?

I know it silly that we care to the degree we seem to about this error message as you have stated its actually telling us its OK.  I guess for me it has always bothered me to have a error message popping up regardless of its meaning.  I guess a bit silly as I said.     Then again if rc2 is coming soon I guess its moot anyways.

It is part of kernel-4.1.13-8, uploaded to current-testing repository
(for R3.1).

Sorry Marek but what is the cmdn string for current-testing

I thought it was:

$ sudo qubes-dom0-update --enablerepo=qubes-dom0-current-testing kernel-4.11.13-8

I need to start keeping a more detailed cheatsheet.

"1", not "11". And you can use just "kernel" to install newest available

Marek,

I thought the default dom0 kernel was 4.1.13-7 and so this was going to -8.   I never actually checked this for dom0 as I up till now had no reason.  I also recall the release stating 4.1 as the feature.   This made it a bit of a surprise when I just ran the kernel upgrade from the testing repo.  It showed the kernel being replaced was 3.19.

After the kernel upgrade with the patch it seems like it now does not show the error.  thanks!!

Cheers,

Tim
