Hi,

after yesterday I decided to use QubesOS on my main SSD, so I backed up everything and backed it up. But I forgot to clone the modified templateVMs.

Now I installed QubesOS on the other SSD, wanted to get the backups back and couldn't. Thus I followed some how-to from this mailing list. I cloned the default template VMs, removed the original template VMs, restored the backups and renamed the modified templateVMs. Now I reinstall the original templateVMs. But why do I actually need to do that? Why do I need the original templateVMs when my modified templates are actually those with updates and some additional software?

You don't really NEED the originals.
I have modified originals, because they are modified with things I need, not with things that only SOME AppVMs need.

Mainly I think that they say make a copy, is so that you still have the original, and if you break the template, you have a fall back to the original.

If you have no use for the RPM-managed templates (i.e., you don't have
any TemplateBasedVMs that are based on those templates), then I think
it should be fine to remove (or not (re-)install) them.
