All,

Thanks for a great weekend at Stoneleigh, Jorge and I were made to feel very welcome despite not really knowing much about kit cars or how they work (or cars in general really); thanks especially to those including Steve who took time to either look at my car issues or let me quiz them for inordinate amounts of time on how and why theirs work and mine doesn't! Have come away with a huge number of ideas and instructions on what to do next.

Thanks also to all those who cooked the food and looked after the hot drinks, which was absolutely brilliant.

Additionally - on the matter of he quiz last night; I've done some research on animals in space and have come to the conclusion (as you will probably expect), that the whole internet is wrong. I imagine that you are as frustrated by me at this obviously international level cover up, which I can only imagine was hatched specifically to make me look like a fool in front of relative strangers.

I am in the process of trying to find a customer services or complaints number for whoever runs the internet and will update you in due course. In the meantime I'm sure you will all agree that the only fair thing to do is to award our team "Team Jorge" 10 bonus points (and the associated win) for their steadfast resolution to stick to their guns despite a hostile and violent crowd and celebrate their grim determination to be proved right despite all actual evidence pointing to the contrary. That's real character.

High 5's will be available to all.

Thanks again, Niall and Jorge..

Niall,

Glad you both enjoyed yourselves over the weekend.Ā  It's really nice to receive feedback. (Negative feedback and suggestions for improvement are also welcomed.)

In relation to the quiz I would suggest complaints are raise by throwing abuse at the quiz master next year ;)

Regards,
Steve

May i suggest that we supply you with the questions for any future quizzes? That you may host ,only to make it a bit fairer for us of course.although we suspect some foul play with lewis changing our answers!
Brilliant weekend ,thank you to all of you.

Hi All.
With a break in my hectic schedule I thought I'd tag-in on this.

The USA launched and recovered some fruit flies on 20 February 1947 in a modified V2 rocket. They got to 109km. (100km is officially space)

The first mammal was Albert II, a rhesus monkey, launched in another modified V2, on 14 June 1949 from the USA. Achieved an altitude of 134km.
Unfortunately a parachute failure doomed poor Albert on the return.

The first mammals to survive a trip to space were two Russian dogs, Tsygan and Dezik, launched in an R-1 (also a modified V2) on 22 July 1951.

Finally, although more animals were launched in-between and after these, Laika is the Russian dog most people know (originally called Kudryavka).
Launched in Sputnik 2 on 3 November 1957, she became the first animal to orbit the Earth aboard only the second spacecraft capable of doing so.
Alas, Laika was never intended to survive and died after six days. Sputnik 2's orbit decayed and it was destroyed as it re-entered the atmosphere on 14 April 1958.

My thanks to Wikipedia, who's information is always 100% reliable! Niall and Jorge may still be right.

Hi Dave

'tis true. Frustratingly I knew all of that already, even the height of the Karman line!

What I didn't factor in, was my poor listening skills. I heard the standard pub quiz question "first animal to orbit the earth" not the actual question which was "first mammal in space".

Genuinely my initial response to hearing the correct question was "well that was fruit flies", which would still have been wrong!

Just a bit of fun - I was totally wrong but I got plenty of others wrong too and was nowhere near the top of the leader board anyway.

There is no disagreement - just a bit of joking around!

It's things like this that explain why my Quantum repairs seem to take 10 times longer than everyone elses!...

Hi Niall.

Ahh, but I cheated, I had time to look up the answers.
Although I have a life long interest in flight and space travel, if I was at the quiz, I'd have said 'chimp'!

I enjoy & drive QSC ā€˜s for more than 25 years . . .
Ā
I own a red Coupe (ex Eddy’s car) and a white LHD 2+2 (ex demonstrator)Ā  but for how long ??
I have lots of spare/new serviceĀ  parts so I can service/fix them on the spot when needed.
Ā
They never saw a garage form the inside. I build/service/maintain them myself incl. engine rebuilds.
Ā
I have saved some money to spray and refurbish the coupe and get the 2+2 out of storage (recent engine rebuild) and fix the damaged sill/door this summer.
Ā
But this plan goes down the drain
Ā
Thanks to the Left ā€œgreenā€ Amsterdam municipality I soon can’t drive to my workshop with my QSC’s
They ban any car/diesel less than Euro4 emissions beginning 2020, banning non electric commercial van’s & mopeds by 2025 and any combustion engine vehicle by 2030.
Other cities want to follow this path to ban combustion vehicles.
Ā
How to go to work and maintain the QSC’s – if I can’t drive to my workshop.
Ā
1 convert to Electric – very expensive & low range
Ā
2 Convert the QSC logbook to Euro6 with a 1.0 Ecoboost engine
The Dutch RDW = DVLA is very reluctant with information on how to change the logbook to Euro6.
It seems I need to do an expensive individual emission and safety test by TNO (applied scientific research).
Need aĀ  very recent low milage/new 1.0 Ecoboost donor car for the engine, gearbox, wire loom etc. modify driveshaft's, etc. etc.
Probably need some re-engineering work. This costs much more than I saved so far
Ā
3 buy a tin car Bedroefde emoticon
I hate rust Auto
Ā
After 25+ years my QSC hobby ends unexpected and far to early.
Ā
There is a very small kit car market in The Netherlands. So selling my QSC’s will be difficult.
In the current state, both need body work, they will not be worth very much.
The car dismantling company’s (scrap heap) don't want them due to the fiber body
I can sell the spare parts to ford lovers – there are less than 80 registered fiesta MK2 XR2 left in The Netherlands . . .

Hi Hans,

That is terrible. Ā Kit cars are enthusiast cars and the interest keeps engineering skills alive. Ā I thought recycling cars and their parts was very green. Ā There is more energy consumed in making than running a car. Ā Is there no exemption you can apply for? Ā If not maybe you need to get political and make one happen. Ā There are classic car dealers and owners in holland (and Europe generally) so it may be time to get active withe the government. Ā It has to be an issue with a lot of people if you cast the net wide enough. Ā

Otherwise you could get an out of town location for the cars and move them out. Ā But I can see that may not be possible. Ā Electric may be your best bet. Ā Some in the QOC are trying electric conversions, so they are best placed to tell you about that. Ā The usual 'tin box route' costs a fortune to own as you say. Ā

Are all the boats going electric as well? Ā

As nice as the electric power idea is the cost is to be honest prohibitive!
I costed converting one of our 2+2 to use for the school run ( 4mile round trip twice a day!) And even that would have a long break even time!Ā  :-(
As Derek says the time to get political may be coming! These politicians make these policies but just assume we all want to follow along and can afford to do so!!!!!
Best regards
Darren

It’s not quite true that making a car causes more emissions than running one. Assuming a 100k life manufacture is somewhere 20-30% of the life emissions. Ā Of course life is down to use. Ā Search for the toyota study if you are interested. Plenty of people have also corroborated the maths and assumptions.Ā

Electric is the future and there are more and more conversion solutions around the corner. Ā  Doesn’t help Hans right now however you aren’t going to change these policies. Ā So you need to find a solution for yourself.

As to 2 mile school run, why not cycle? Ā ;-)

Boats will be wind powered. It’s the future, ahem.Ā

Until the point when i.c. engines are banned in Amsterdam it seems possible that LPG might be the easiest solution to the problem faced by Hans.

In considering electric propulsion has the possibility of usingĀ  electric power to the rear wheels, with a range suited only to inner city use, been overlooked.Ā  With recharging from the mains at home and at the office/workshop and the use of drive systems already developed for motor scooters or motorbikes costs might be relatively low.

Funny you suggest that as it was one idea a friend suggested when I looked at the conversion.
He suggested using a rear axle from a gwiz for sub 5 mile or so hops or in traffic shunting, just using the original ice up front at other times or to charge the battery's extra(I already have a 280a alternator fitted due to the electric heater system booster)
