What rear springs do folks recommend?

My rear ride height seems too high - much bigger gap between the arch and tyre at rear than the front. I have noticed same on pictures of other saloons. Wondering if this is a design feature or wrong length springs have been fitted at some point.

The build manual recommends soft 1100 springs. Mine was built using a mk2 XR2 donor (shorter stiffer springs?) but these may well have been changed since original build.

The car handles ok but to me the stance does not "look right" as is.

There are 3 types of rear fiesta spring.

1.  XR2 – Short

2.  950 – 1400 CVH (they are all the same)

3.  Van – Same length as number 2 but stiffer, handy for heavy loads.

When I built my 3 cars 2 saloon 1 2+2 ,I had the same nose down effect from using xr2 front and 1100 rear . Because of the poor front ground clearance I opted to use 1600 diesel front springs which ford claimed were same rate as xr2 but longer length.

Paul, Chris, Jim - thanks for info

I will probably get a chance to look at the rear suspension coming week. Will get springs off and measure.
Anyone know what the free lengths and ratings are of these standard Ford sprngs? I see Burton have some alternative spings but do not list rating of standard springs.

I have always been unhappy with the rear of my saloon, get the pose right and you can't have anyone on the rear seats, and visa versa.
So I have recently been looking at air bag options.
My idea is to have the bags down when standing and pump up as required for extra support or clearance on the go.

I thought about air aswell, but I couldn’t find anywhere to put the tank as I still had to fit a drum kit in !!

I looked at this lot;

I'm not sure you need a tank, certainly not a big one if you do, my D2 disco has no tank and can readjust height pretty quick enough.
I would love to do the fronts too but the bags for struts are big money! I am looking to find  some OEM rear bags if possible as they are much much cheaper than aftermarket ones!

Hi folks

Reading this thread, my initial thought was to say nothing there being plenty people volunteering info and opinions, but  I can no longer suppress the loud voice in my head which is saying "WHOA". I firmly believe that a supplementary air system on the Q saloon is an unnecessary complication. I attach a photo of mine. I think you will agree that it's "stance" is ok, perhaps even "just right". It's on Boge Fiesta 1100 rear springs and XR2 front springs. It has new OEM rubber bump stops/spring assisters and an alloy spacer of the same dimensions as the original OEM steel item. Please see attached photo. It handles beautifully on that setup and can carry two medium size adults in the rear along with a full complement of emergency equipment in the recess behind the rear seats, with no fouling of tyres on bodywork and no tendency to ground fuel tank nor exhaust on undulating roads. Admittedly it did take some care when setting axle, trailing rod and panhard rod lengths to ensure no tyre to bodywork contact at extremes of body roll and spring compression (http://quantumforum.proboards.com/thread/522/quantum-saloon-full-rebuild?page=3) but that was mainly because of the use of 7" rims and 195/15 tyres. I have also had to be careful with exhaust system positioning.

To summarise - in my view the KISS principle is sound in this application!!

Best regards
Bill

Maybe non-linear (progressive) springs would be a solution - if suitable ones could be be sourced?
