Dear All,

Took off the nose cone today. The inner wheel arch covers that fill the back of the nose cone within the wheel arch are pop riveted on. I did wonder if there is a better way of doing it? The rivets are quite practical and easy enough to reset, so maybe not. But I note that production vehicles now use a plastic clip system for the same job. Rivnuts and dome head bolts seem to be the deluxe version. But maybe they would not last?

What have you done? What is the best?

Cheers

Derek

I used the minimum of self-tappers for mine which (mostly) wedge into position, so If I recall only 3 screws. Were yours supplied with the kit? I had to make my own.

Wheel arch liners??
I always felt something was missing and so why so much dirt built up!

Hi Derek et al

My saloon does not have and never has had such covers fitted and I've not found any downside to that.

Just for interest, the radiator originally was in the engine bay but during a full rebuild a few years ago, I moved it in front of the bulkhead to accommodate a decent tubular exhaust manifold.

As you've probably discovered, removing the nose cone can be a pig if stainless fasteners were not used to mount it, but all are reachable, just, with a cutting disc on an angle grinder.

Best regards
Bill

I got the coupe as a part finished rebuild but Eddie fitted the new nose cone during the respray and pop rivets were his fit.

I think they are partly to stop mud etc building up in the back of the nose cone.
And also they make more of a shield to the void between the inner and outer wings that supplys air to the heater system.
I imagine that without them that it might be possible for water from a big puddle to splash up there and enter the car.

My coupe had S/S fasteners and it was a non-event to take the nose cone off.  (Sorry to those who have struggled!)  It was a more recent refit with the redesigned front lights shape. If you do not have liners I would have thought the lights and wiring would have got a pounding and would need to be very waterproof.

My covers are plastic, but my son’s car has aluminium.

The bloke who built mine had made some out of aluminium (badly) and had used steel self tappers to hold it on.
The screws had rusted solid and had to be drilled out.
I intend to made some better ones out of aluminium and use stainless rivnuts.

Be careful mixing stainless steel and aluminium.  You might quickly find you have less aluminium than when you started!  Use some plastic/rubber washers to isolate the 2 if possible.

It will be quite a while before it gets done anyway.
I bought a new (150 year old) house which needs ‘a bit’ of work.....
Once the house is done I can build the new garage THEN carry on with the Q rebuild !!

I think you have that the wrong way round, you need the garage first to put all the tools in for fixing the house.
And, make sure its big enough to take the Q as well Smile

I made moulds for mine using aluminium, and then used GRP to make the finished parts– I think I kept the aluminium moulds somewhere. If you wax your aluminium ones( or tape them) you may be able to make GRP ones off them?

The property is still for sale, but unfortunately the house wouldn't have been suitable and I suspected the plot is likely to floor.  However the outside is described:

"The property is approached via a pair of metal gates providing access to the gravelled driveway which in turn leads to a parking and turning area suitable for four/five vehicles. Set to the side is a steel portal farm OUTBUILDING/BARN: 13.60m x 11.30m with concrete floor and inset concrete block-work at low level, large high door to front and doors to side and back, plus side service door. Internal wide opening into workshop area with wide through door to back. Two internal side storage rooms of approximately 4.42m x 2.47m one room has a diesel generator for the workshop area. Power and lighting and outside security floodlighting.
Adjacent to the outbuilding is an extensive hardstanding area with metal farm gate giving access to a level meadow with stream boundary and hedges."

The meadow that comes with it is allowed to accommodate up to 5 caravans, plus there's a lovely old pub 10 minutes walk away.

Regards,
Steve

Took me a while to work out what the last word in “I suspected the plot is likely to floor” was meant to be (flood).

Looks nice, i found it on the net.
Bit far away for us Sad smile

The house came with a garage (ish) and the Q fitted into it, just.
All the tools will go into one of the rooms when we’ve had the roofs repaired.
The Q tour might have seen it while they were in Invergordon...
