Hi, I'm having difficulty finding new or good front spring top cups.  Rebuilding my saloons front struts using new springs and shocks, the top mount and plate are good ( galvanised I think) but the spring cups below mount are both rusted through and very thin after cleaning them up. Does anyone have or has recently successfully found a source for these parts?  1985 XR2 I believe. Thx

Hi Rick

Good luck with the rebuild.

Seems others have had the same issue.  Found this with a search:

Pattern new items,

Have a look.

Sorry , Yes you are right.  Must keep looking.  Hopefully someone is remanufacturing.  Maybe Fiesta owners club might know?  Sprayed mine in wax oil, so still there.

Hi All,
Has anybody seen any information on the compatibility of the CVH and silver top Zetec engines with E10 petrol ?

Thanks,

I've not extensively looked into this, but isn't the issue more related to the rubber hoses than anything else?  I thought the higher Ethanol content will cause older rubber hoses to break down faster, but newer rubber hoses should be OK.

This is from the RAC website, not sure what seals will be affected, but our metal fuel tanks might be prone to internal corrosion.

"If you put E10 fuel in an incompatible car it will still run, but seals, plastics and metals may be damaged over longer periods as a result of bioethanol's corrosive properties. It is a hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water from the atmosphere, leading to condensation in fuel tanks if the car remains unused for long periods of time."

Happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

Regards,
Steve

I’m not sure if it’s just the hoses.
I think it can also affect seals in fuel pump, fuel pressure regulators and injectors etc.
I seem to remember E5 petrol had a very bad effect on the seals in the old Jetronic metering units as used in the Escort XR3I and RS Turbo

I guess i should probably replace the flexible rubber pipe in the 2+2, that will still be whatever was around when i built it in the 90’s !
My local garage has already switched to E10

I'm sure I saw info on this on one of the kit car Facebook groups and there was DVLA guidance on line about it. At work just now so don't have time to look.

I looked there, just says all Fords post 1992 are ok (i guess that covers Zetecs) apart from a specific 1.8 Mondeo for some reason.

I’m sure all this e10 nonsense is just a part of the box ticking for climate change. I hear that when using e10 the fuel economy goes down so you’d probably have to burn as much fossil fuel as part of the e10 fuel-to do a distance as you would if you only used pure fossil fuel, the ethanol only seems to go along for the ride

I’m told that the Super Unleaded fuel is still E5 so that’s an option if you can stomach the extra cost per litre.

But then I’ve been wondering if maybe my Q might prefer a younger engine rather than drink watered down E10 petrol. 😉

Having been very impressed with the one litre 125PS Ecoboost in my Focus, I’m thinking that might make a lot of sense. Anyone tried fitting one of those in a Q yet?

Best

Somebody is doing the Ecoboost conversion, i can’t remember if it was on here or on the facebook group (the open one, not the QOC members only one).

I found my coupe with the 2 litre injected did more to the gallon and just about covered the cost and it was smoother.  So I only use super/high octane petrol now.

There has been controversy over Ethanol, arguments for are that the crop (rapeseed?) removes CO2 and provides O2, arguments against are stating that land should be used for food crops, not fuel.

As always, no everyone will be happy. Back in 1989, Ford/New Holland tractors where I worked at the time were making tractor for Brazil which run on 100 % Ethanol.

Maybe we are fortunate, it could be worse?

I thought I would like a 1.25 Sigma, but I’m sure the exhaust manifold would cook the bulkhead! Ecoboost may be the same position, I don’t know anything about them TBF.

I only use Super Unleaded E5

E10 kills your CV engine. It affects hoses, gaskets and even alu. incl. the carburettor floaters.
You can buy special fuel hoses but the carb and its gaskets can still be a problem

Hans

Or you make E0 yourself.
20L petrol, 1 liter of water mixed with food colour, Mix/shake. Let is stand for have a day and drain the colour liquid and you have Petrol without Alcohol
Ideal when you store your QSC for longer periods like winter.

I bought some ethanol proof hose last week from Car Builder Solutions, having tried local outlets………. Beware, that (certainly in my experience) some vendors seem to either have no knowledge or not care about what they are selling or the consequences of ethanol in petrol. Geoff has his experience, and I have similar (hose failure on Rickman the day after MOT test!). ‘Guidance’ from local motor factor was “yes, that’s the hose you want, it’s ok with petrol or diesel” when I specifically asked for hose that was ok with petrol containing ethanol. The local ‘motorsport’ (ie go faster Vauxhall saloon – carlos fandango wheels) garage, said “this hose is ok – we don’t know anyone who’s had problems with it, just use super unleaded” when trying to sell me a hose which just said Gates 8mm on it.

*********** It needs to be to spec SAEJ30 R9 or DIN73379 (which should be marked repeatedly on the hose)************

That's my understanding too, metal fuel tanks, hoses and seals are the worst affected.example seals would be o rings and gaskets ( manifold perhaps if rubber type?) . Also construction of some units such as level sender as they have mixed metal and other materials.
