Back in the summer I bought a saloon fitted with an ST170 engine with a low oil pressure problem and other than fixing the window winder haven't touched it. However i now have what i hope is a good replacement ST170 engine which should be fitted in the next couple of weeks. When the old engine is out i'll have a look to see what was the cause of the low pressure but one thought I've had (which may well be complete rubbish) is :- could the problem be with the sump/oil pickup as the engine is now upright but would have slanted slightly when in the Focus, is the change of angle sufficient to cause a problem? Anyone done a similar conversion?

Was the engine slanted in the ST170 ?
If so, any idea of the angle.
I’ve one to go in a H4 but i assumed it was level.

I’d be interested in your old engine for use as a mock up engine in the H4, the one i have is very low mileage and quite clean, i’d like to keep it that way Smile
Depending on where you are in the UK

Hi Russ, I don’t recall if you’ve posted about the low oil pressure before (and I’m using a new computer so can’t access notes from before 6 weeks ago .  So forgive me if it’s going over old ground, but how do you know there’s a low oil pressure problem? I had a car many years ago which had (for whatever reason) been fitted with a sender which lit the oil pressure light at anything below 30PSI, so in hot weather was a pain because it was unclear if there was a real problem on not. IIRC the more recent Fords have an oil pressure sender which gives warning at about 3PSI, so if it has the regular one the engine is well on the way to being wrecked if it lights the warning!  The sender (again IIRC) will have the pressure marked on it in pascals.

Jim. The angle isn't a lot, i'm fairly sure i've heard  a figure of 8 degrees forward mentioned, i think it was just to allow the bonnet to make a more pleasing shape. I can't find any confirmation online so it's entirely possible i've got it all wrong. I'm in west wales by the way.

Martin Fairly sure it's a genuine loss of pressure, the oil warning light comes on and a few seconds later the engine starts to make a clattery noise.I knew it had this problem and had been driven, with warning light on and making a noise, for a few miles when i bought it.

That does sound pretty serious – I can almost hear it from here!

I did a little more research and found the same sump & pickup is used across all zetec e engines, the pickup is in the middle, so assuming the 8 degree slope is right and the sump is 200mm wide then bringing the engine level would put the pickup pipe 14mm deeper into the oil (if my maths are correct; they should be i used an online calculator!).
So the end result is whatever else is wrong with the engine it's not the oil pickup. It also means (if the 8 degrees is right) the dipstick needs recalibrating or the dipstick tube needs changing.
Does that all make sense or have i slipped up somewhre?

Hi all,

I've been asked to provide a valuation of my Quantum as part of my divorce settlement. Naturally all the normal places where one might find the value are no use. I'm tempted just to look at recent ebay sales prices but thought it worthwhile asking the hivemind here too as you may have additional info of sales elsewhere.
My Q was the Stourbridge factory demonstrator until I bought it in 1999 so it may well be familiar to many of you from magazine articles and test drives. It has the 2 litre engine with all the clever stuff done to make it quicker, although I think several horsepowers have escaped over the last 20 years. The Wooldridges called it Gox because the registration was P446GOX. It's currently off the road, but only because money is tight. It's a little tired in places compared to some of your excellent examples of the 2+2. Things like wear on the seats and their black paint lifting to show the dash's original grey in places. But I still love it - and very much plan to keep it. It's still roadworthy, and insured. Just not taxed and MOT'd right now. I start it up periodically and run it as far as I can off the public highway just to keep it in good order. I realise that this is all a bit vague but as long as I can be seen to have made a reasonable effort that should be enough for the court. I know that we all want our cars to be valued highly but in this one specific instance I'm happy to have a realistic value to use, rather than what we all hope our cars *might* be worth.
Can any of you give me a very vague idea of what a slightly tired but still roadworthy yellow 2+2 might actually sell for?
Thanks in advance

Matthew

Hi Matthew,
There are slot of factors to take into consideration but I would say £1000 upwards is a good guide for you...
Cheers

I purchase my 2+2 for 800pounds with an MOT

I nearly purchased a second which sold for 500 Pounds without MOT

So I would say you would be looking for something within that range
