Hi All,
The servo for Mk1 Quantum 003 has turned out to be seized (never come across that before).
We are trying to get it finished for Stoneleigh, does anybody have a spare that they would part with ?
It has to be from a Mk1 Fiesta as it’s a smaller diameter body and there is no space for the larger Mk2 one (not that they are easy to find either).

Many thanks,

Jim

I will check in the stores at home and let you know Jim. There is one somewhere for 017 and its possibly with steve failing that 016 might have to donate for the moment.....
Regards Andy

Thanks Andy.
Steve is going to look for the one from 017 (assuming that isn’t what is already on 003) on Monday as where it might be is in the garage, currently behind my saloon and his saloon on a trailer.

Steve said you knew a company that might be able to recondition it ?
I’ve tried the usual sources but they are rarer than the Mk2 unless we risk a very crusty looking one on Ebay for £45 or a brand new one for £400 something.

Thanks,

Jim

That’s the crusty one i mentioned, although looking at the magnified pictures it may not be as bad as i thought.
I’ve emailed the seller asking him to confirm it still moves freely.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

I used a Land Rover Defender one to replace the one on my Rickman, IIRC it’s about 6.5 inch diameter (It had to be small ‘cos the Escort one was similarly small! ) It was only £60 brand new and as these were mostly supplied by Girling or similar, the manufacturer’s changed as little as possible to be able to sell a product for another vehicle. I can take some measurements eg c/c of master cylinder bolts and c/c any ‘layout’ of bracket mounting bolts. Martin

Hi Martin,
That would be very handy if you could measure your Land Rover Defender one.
I believe the Mk1 Fiesta servo is very similar to the Mk2 Escort one which i assume is what was on your Rickman.
As long as the OD isn’t too big the input and output shafts and the mount to the bracket can all be modified.

Many thanks,

Jim

Dimensions of Land rover Defender servo…

Circumference 590mm (body) 630 (folded seam). So I guess 7.5 inches body or maybe 7 inch diaphragm?

The mounting studs for bracket 4 studs on a square, side c/c 88mm 3 ½ inches?

2 mounting studs for master cylinder 83mm c/c (3 ¼ inches)

“Thickness” 85mm

All dimension approx. (using a metal tape), I can try to get the Vernier on it for more accuracy if required, and also send a photo if needed.

It’s surprisingly difficult to measure in situ! Hope that all makes sense.

Part number is STC1816 (series 3  - not defender, please forgive my memory). Cost was 59.95, and I got free postage by adding a brake nut for 70p thus avoiding several £ carriage 😊. Britpart is the manufacturer (from most land rover stockists), with IIRC 3 year warranty, the ‘genuine Land Rover’ part was  nearly £300 with 1 year warranty – evidence on the ‘net that they are the same part in different packaging! I used a set screw m10 and copper washer to fill an unused thread in the body (believe it’s for a switch/sensor? On the land Rover). You are correct that the Rickman used a mk2 escort servo. This works just as well.

Martin

Hi Martin,
Thank you for doing all that measuring.
I was out late last night but with compare it all this evening.

In the pictures the input shaft appears much shorter and with a a different fitting, what did you do with that ?

I jut cut the eye off, and used a piece of 10mm bore x 3mm wall steel tube which, when ‘joined’ both rods (and most importantly couldn’t fall off!), thus avoiding the need to weld near any heat-critical parts. There is a bonus in that I don’t need to take the complete tower off to get the servo off.

I’m sur the pushrod is removeable (replaceable?) but didn’t explore that avenue.

Thank you Martin,
I measured the existing one at 565mm circumference around the seam which equals about 180mm dia.
The stud spacing match within measurement error.

Looks like a goer.

When I ‘took the chance’ on purchasing the Land Rover one (I struggled to get any info off suppliers) I took the chance on the basis that I could send it back for less than £10 if it really wasn’t suitable.

I’ll be interested to know the outcome. Mine fitted straight on, and there was no need to even alter the position of the acorn nut on the centre. Had it fitted in a couple of hours, just had to ‘adjust’ the bundy pipes a little!
