Failed to start new tape backup session

Dear Concern,

We are using quadstor VTL Version3.0.58. Few months we receive Failed to start new tape backup session. Issue occur when one tape full but can't collect another free space tape. we have enough available storage. how to resolve this issue?

pls check the attached file.

Hi,

We had a look at the logs. The out of physical space condition is correct.

bdev size 128006131548160
bdev used 125946502111232

Around 125TB of the configured 128TB is used. There is some raw capacity towards the end which we do not use due to performance conditions.

bdev uncompressed size 125402210316288
bdev compressed size 0
bdev compression hits 0

It looks like all the data is written uncompressed to disk. Please check if your backup application/job has disabled device/hardware compression. Compression should bring down the space utilization significantly,


dedupe size 1845983891456
zero size 178126848
vcart used 127248372334592

Of the total 125TB of user data only 1+TB was deduplicated. Which backup application is writing to the tapes ? What are datasets - File, DB, VMs etc ?

Hardware Compression enable now.
veeam backup and replication v 11 writing to the tapes.
datasets using-  file, exchange DB, VMs

also check retention policy & tape required option, everything looks good.  pls check the attach file.

Hardware compression would reduce storage utilization for new backups. But the storage pool was already fully utilized. Was storage space cleared before backups (erasing/deleting a few tapes or adding new storage)

If yes, please send the diagnostic logs

LTO145L7 free tape before backup start. LTO134L7 tape full its ok but backup can't continue with free tape.

You can send the logs to vtlsu...@quadstor.com or you could use file transfer sites such as wetransfer etc.

Hi,

You need to create enough free space to restart the backups. Right now free space still around 1% free (2 TB out of approx 196 TB) which is not enough.  You need to bring the free space to more than 10 to 20 TB to not have this problem recurring periodically.

Hi,

Data size is the size of data received from the host. This would be the size of data sent by Veeam to the tape drive
Used size is the size of data on disk. If there is no compression then it's almost the same as data size. If we assume for e.g 2:1 compression then this would be half the data size.

So if you erase a tape, you might be able to free up to the used size. Deduplication is a factor in how much gets freed. If the block which the tape uses is referenced by another  tape then you will have less space freed. This is why we said "you might be able to free up to the used size"

at the moment tape erase also failed.

Hi,

Please try deleting tapes and bring down the storage pool space utilization. You should then be able to create tapes with the same label and work with them.

It looks like the application is trying to write a label at the start of the tape which should also erase the tape data, but in this case it wont work because any new writes will fail.
